About The Position

The Probation Officer I position involves providing day-to-day supervision to probationers requiring both intensive and regular probation/parole/post-release supervision. The officer will assess the criminogenic and treatment needs of the probationer and actively apply evidence-based practices, including effective communication skills, principles, and techniques to promote internal change within the probationer. Collaboration with probationers, district, and community resources is essential to develop and manage individualized treatment plans. Responsibilities also include making home and community contacts according to case needs and supervision plans, preparing Pre-sentence Investigations, sentencing guidelines, and other reports as assigned in a timely manner, and testifying and providing sentencing recommendations to the court/attorney.

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Working knowledge of the criminal justice system.
  • Experience with case management and counseling techniques, including Motivational Interviewing.
  • Demonstrated ability to write reports and work with individuals in conflict with the legal system.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Capable of independent judgment and action.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of probationers, co-workers, and community-based organizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Individual counseling experience and/or casework with adults.
  • Education in Rehabilitation Counseling, Psychology, Sociology/Social Work, Criminology, Administration of Justice, or Public Safety.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
