About The Position

The Probation Officer 1 is responsible for supervising low-risk individuals placed on probation, ensuring compliance with court-ordered conditions, and providing guidance to support rehabilitation and reduce recidivism. This role involves conducting assessments, monitoring progress, enforcing probation terms, and collaborating with law enforcement, social services, and community resources. This role will report to the Lead Probation Officer.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, sociology, social work, criminology, psychology or closely related field
  • At least 21 years of age
  • Ability to obtain CLEET certification within one year of employment
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system, case management, case planning, and probation-related theories, principles, laws, case law, and operations
  • Able to qualify yearly with department firearms
  • Ability to make critical decisions
  • Proficient in operating a computer and using Microsoft Office products and Tribal Court Case Management System

Responsibilities

  • Perform case management for low-risk adult offenders ordered to supervision by Choctaw Nation District Court.
  • Conduct regular field, home, and employment contacts with probationers to assess progress and provide necessary support.
  • Assess probationers’ risks and needs as determined by the Ohio Risk Assessment System (ORAS) by employing motivational interviewing skills.
  • Create a written case plan for each assigned probationer, outlining clear goals and objectives.
  • Refer probationers to individual and group counseling therapy as needed to support treatment plan objectives and rehabilitation efforts.
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to review all the probationers’ treatment progress or lack thereof and determine suitable courses of action to follow.
  • Administer drug and alcohol tests when required and report violations to the court.
  • Arrange for probationers to participate in educational opportunities, including personal development, spirituality, and cultural enhancement.
  • Encourage and assist them in developing life skills, securing employment, and making positive behavioral changes to support their rehabilitation and reintegration.
  • Collaborate with other Law Enforcement Departments to ensure consistent and comprehensive services to the citizens of the Choctaw Nation through the Judicial Branch.
  • Document probationers' progress, compliance, and activities, and provide detailed reports with recommendations to the Choctaw Nation Office of the Prosecutor and the Choctaw Nation Sentencing Judge to support informed decision-making.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.
