About The Position

State Of Vermont Probation & Parole Officers must be conscientious, self-motivated individuals with the ability to think on their feet in a fast-paced environment. They need a strong understanding of ethics and boundaries, as well as the ability to communicate and work in a team setting. Understanding of victim awareness, risk intervention strategies, and case planning practices, plus the ability to maintain a professional rapport with local law-enforcement agencies and community partners is essential. The work involves an office setting with required field work. Standard hours are 7:45 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday, though some after-hours, weekend, and additional field work may be necessary. New officers must attend six weeks of instruction at the Vermont Correctional Academy.

  • High school diploma or equivalent or higher
  • Three (3) years or more experience in human services casework such as mental health/addiction counseling, work in a residential treatment center, juvenile justice, direct service legal work, emergency services, corrections, law enforcement, military or similar job duties
  • Possession of a valid driver's license
  • Pass a criminal background check (certain convictions can be disqualifying)
  • Pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position, including DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks
  • Provide relevant information regarding previous institutional employers for DOC PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) requirements
  • Candidates with any felony conviction record or who, within the past five (5) years, have been placed under supervision or sanctioned for a misdemeanor conviction must receive a waiver from the Commissioner of Corrections

Nice To Haves
