About The Position

The Probation and Parole Officer position within the Missouri Department of Corrections is a vital role focused on transforming lives and ensuring public safety. Officers are responsible for supervising offenders, assessing their needs and risks, and providing guidance to help them reintegrate into society. This position requires a commitment to community service and collaboration with various agencies to support offenders' rehabilitation.

Requirements

  • Four or more years of vocational or higher-level experience in social services, probation and parole, corrections casework, guidance and counseling, education, psychology, sociology, mental health, substance use, law enforcement, or closely related fields.
  • Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.
  • Successful completion of safety training including defensive tactics and the ability to re-qualify annually.

Nice To Haves

  • Earned credit hours from an accredited college or university may substitute for required experience at a rate of 30 credit hours for one year.

Responsibilities

  • Investigates offender's home, work, and social environments for circuit courts and the Board of Probation and Parole.
  • Collects, verifies, and evaluates data to incorporate into reports and records.
  • Assesses needs and risk levels to determine appropriate supervision strategies for effective offender management and public safety.
  • Contacts offenders in their homes or places of employment to counsel them on personal and adjustment problems.
  • Attends court to receive assignments and make reports.
  • Assists in vocational, educational, and social adjustment planning for assigned offenders.
  • Cooperates with public and private agencies and law enforcement in managing offenders.
  • Investigates offender violations and takes appropriate action, including issuing warrants.
  • Prepares statistical reports of activities and administers breathalyzer and urinalysis testing.
  • Assists in special investigations, research projects, and serves on committees/task forces within the Department and community.
