About The Position

The Medical Interpreter is responsible for coordinating and delivering both verbal and written language interpretation services for patients, families, and caregivers. This PRN position requires flexibility to cover various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, with on-call responsibilities. The role emphasizes clear communication, cultural sensitivity, and adherence to professional standards and regulations.

Requirements

• Successful completion of a pre-hire skills assessment.
• Successful completion of a 40-hr. Professional Medical Interpreting Course or equivalent qualifications such as interpreting certification, a college degree in translation, or 2 years of experience as a professional interpreter.
• Excellent oral and written command of both source and target languages.
• Ability to perform consecutive, simultaneous, and sight translation with high accuracy in both languages.
• Demonstrated proficiency of medical terminology in both languages.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.
• National Certification as a Medical Interpreter through NBCMI or CCHI; Utah certification for Medical Language Interpreter through DOPL.
• Experience as a professional medical interpreter.
• Completion of a medical terminology course.

Responsibilities

• Provides complete and accurate interpretation for patients, families, and Intermountain staff to facilitate clear communication, either in-person, over video, or telephone.
• Uses communication methods appropriate for patient developmental age and mental condition.
• Assists patients, families, and staff with sight translation of forms and is familiar with commonly used medical terminology.
• Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and renders unbiased interpretation to ensure an accurate exchange of information.
• Adheres to accepted norms of professional ethics and standards of practice for Medical Interpreters, as well as Intermountain Policies and relevant laws.
• Manages time productively, responding to requests in a timely manner and providing estimated times of arrival for interpretation assignments.
• Coordinates interpretation assignments and keeps timely, accurate records of all interpretation encounters.
• Uses computer, software, and internet tools for research, data entry, and communication purposes.
• May provide translation services and completes translation assignments in a timely manner with high accuracy.
