About The Position

Position Overview: PRN Registered Nurse staffs clinics on an as-needed basis, not on a fixed schedule, to offset staffing shortages, high volumes, or special circumstances occurring in infusion clinics or nurse triage areas. The PRN nurse provides comprehensive cancer and hematology care by assessing and monitoring patients, administering therapy, and coordinating all aspects of the treatment plan. The PRN nurse works in collaboration with providers and other member of the health care team.

Requirements

  • Licensed RN in the State of Michigan.
  • Successful completion of competency-based orientation program.
  • ONS Chemo & Biotherapy Provider Card within 6 months of employment.
  • BLS certification required within 90 days of employment.
  • Minimum of 2 years medical/surgical nursing experience, oncology preferred.
  • Proficient in successful peripheral IV access and central line management (PICCs/port-a-caths).
  • Able to efficiently navigate computer systems including electronic health record.
  • Work assigned area.
  • Work a minimum of three 8–10-hour shifts per calendar month.
  • Shift length may be modified based on clinic needs.
  • Notice will be provided in advance of shift.
  • Each calendar year works 2 of 4 highly requested PTO weeks. Includes weeks of spring break, July 4, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Does not include actual holiday.
  • Communicates next month availability to the nurse manager by the 15th of each month.
  • Required to maintain knowledge of current trends and developments in oncology/hematology by participating in required competencies, reading applicable literature, attending appliable conferences, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Functions under the Infusion Nurse and Telephone Triage Nurse job descriptions
  • Provides evidenced-based nursing care in cooperation with providers, national oncology/hematology care standards and in accordance with department policy/procedure.
  • Provides research-based nursing care in cooperation with physicians, research team and community and national research standards.
  • Administers chemotherapy/immunotherapy in accordance with ONS, ASCO and OSHA guidelines.
  • Assesses and monitors the patient’s condition, partnering to create and maintain an individualized plan of care focused on meeting the needs and goals of the patient and their significant others.
  • Partners with patients and significant others to evaluate educational needs.
  • Develops implements appropriate teaching strategies to address symptoms, side effects, medications, diagnostic procedures, nutrition and maintenance of health and wellness.
  • Initiates follow-up care in the home and community.
  • Documents nursing care in accordance with guidelines.
  • Communicates with other health team members in a clear and calm manner ensuring continuity of care and effective coordination of services.
  • Serves as an advocate for patients/significant others.
  • Assumes a leadership role by appropriately delegating to support staff as needed to facilitate safe, efficient, and quality patient care.
  • Ensures documentation of chargeable services including supplies.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • All other duties as assigned.
