About The Position

The Emergency Department is a 30-bed Emergency Care Unit that operates in a rapid-paced, high acuity environment, handling approximately 155 visits per day and over 55,000 annual visits. The position requires the Registered Nurse to implement, direct, and coordinate patient care using the nursing process, which includes assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The role also involves recognizing and treating the physical and psychosocial changes unique to the age/population group served. An orientation program facilitated by a Clinical Educator is provided, focusing on Emergency Nursing, especially for novice nurses. The Emergency Nursing Association (ENA) orientation curriculum is also offered online. This is a PRN position requiring a minimum of 24 hours off shift per 6-week schedule, with 12-hour shifts during the day, evening, and night, including weekends and holidays as needed. Shift and weekend differentials are eligible.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
  • Evidence of participation in educational programs to maintain current knowledge and clinical skills.
  • Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required.
  • Previous nursing experience in specialty area preferred.
  • For Emergency Department, at least one year of RN experience in ED or Critical Care required.
  • Successful completion of EKG course required.
  • Eligible for or currently licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in Pennsylvania.
  • CPR certification required.
  • ACLS required for various specialties including Emergency, CCU, and others.
  • PALS required for Emergency and Pediatric trained staff within one year from start date.

  • CPAN/CAPA preferred for PACU/SDS.
  • CRRN preferred for Rehabilitation Medicine.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates safe medication practice.

  • Completes chart checks to ensure no missed orders.
  • Accurately transcribes physician's orders.
  • Demonstrates therapeutic communication skills.

  • Attends 50% of staff/committee meetings and in-services for the area.
  • Demonstrates leadership through the nursing process and supervision.
  • Acts as a resource person regarding patient care and staff orientation.
  • Responds to delays in a calm manner and provides alternatives.
  • Analyzes assessment data and documents on Plan of Care.
  • Uses effective problem-solving skills to plan patient care.
  • Identifies critical factors evidencing changes in patient condition.
  • Completes and documents discharge assessments against plan of care goals.
  • Initiates and maintains Intravenous Therapy according to IV standards.
  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Utilizes proper body mechanics to prevent injury.
  • Functions as a virtual nurse as assigned, including admissions and discharges.
  • Completes accurate initial triage to ESI and department standards.
  • Performs thorough and accurate chief complaint specific assessments.
  • Assesses and identifies patients for indications of abuse and initiates follow-up.
  • Implements advanced emergency skills to ED patients.
  • Collaboratively coordinates with other departments to meet patient needs.
  • Achieves credentialing in conscious sedation annually.
  • Attends annual skills day for unit specific competencies.
  • Early identification and processing of AMI patients to cath lab.
  • Demonstrates proper technique for accessing and maintaining indwelling ports.
  • Completes and transmits 12 lead EKGs accurately.
  • Demonstrates proper setup and nursing care during chest tube insertion.
  • Demonstrates proficient phlebotomy skills on all age groups.
  • Demonstrates proper use of Lifepak in all functions.
  • Identifies patients by chief complaint and initiates department protocols.
  • Demonstrates proper application of restraints and completes documentation.
