As a Patient Companion, you will provide caregiver support by assisting with constant observation of patients as assigned by the Registered Nurse. You will provide patients with comfort and companionship while delivering direct and indirect care. In the Float Pool position, you will work with diverse populations of patients in numerous units, departments and/or locations while learning from many of our best caregivers. A caregiver in this position works PRN (as needed) varying shifts, which can include days, evenings, nights and weekends. You must work 48 hours within a six-week period.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking. Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
  • You will be required to comply with this program, which will include obtaining an influenza vaccination on an annual basis or obtaining an approved exemption.

Nice To Haves

  • Heartsaver level of Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross. If you do not hold this certification, you must obtain it within three months of hire
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic patient care activities, such as basic hygiene, skin care and vital signs

Responsibilities

  • Assist with direct and indirect patient care for one to two patients, such as rooming, vital signs, weight and pulse oximetry. If assigned to a closed unit, you will observe three to four patients.
  • Assure patient safety by ensuring that catheters, tubes or other medical equipment have not been removed or disconnected.
  • Accompany and assist patients at all times, including transport, tests, transfers, ambulation.
  • Identify and report changes in patient status to an RN or physician.
  • Complete all documentation and provide hand-off communication to caregivers responsible for the patient.
