About The Position

This is a PRN position requiring coverage during nights and weekends. The role involves independently preparing complex and routine patient specimens for processing and special procedures. This includes describing, measuring, dissecting, and weighing specimens, as well as entering specimen information into the computer. The position requires efficient organization and performance of tasks to meet departmental turnaround time standards and accommodate patient care needs. Collaboration with supervisory staff is essential to achieve departmental goals, improve service, quality, cost-effectiveness, and adherence to regulatory guidelines.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree of Science in Pathologists' Assistant (Required)
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited training program for Pathologists’ Assistant or in a biological science (prior to 2005) (Required)
  • Basic knowledge of human anatomy (Required proficiency)
  • Microsurgical techniques (Required proficiency)
  • Pathologic disease processes (Required proficiency)
  • Understanding of safety and infection control requirements of position (Required proficiency)
  • Skills in obtaining/preparing tissue for evaluation (Required proficiency)
  • Written and verbal communication, computer operation, organization, prioritizing, problem solving, time management, decision making (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to provide assistance to pathologists in a timely and quality manner (Required proficiency)
  • Use and maintain pathology equipment appropriately (Required proficiency)
  • Utilize good judgment (Required proficiency)
  • Prepare and maintain records, use electronic communications tools and software (Required proficiency)
  • Pathologist Assistant (PA-ASCP) or eligible (Required)

Responsibilities

  • Perform macroscopic dissection and meticulously describe surgical specimens with precision and attention to detail.
  • Conduct intraoperative frozen sectioning procedures with accuracy and efficiency, including gross description, tissue selection, appropriate staining techniques, and precise cutting methods.
  • Procure and meticulously process tissue for various ancillary studies, ensuring proper handling and preservation techniques are followed.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to ensure timely and accurate communication of specimen findings and any relevant ancillary study results.
  • Maintain accurate records of all specimen dissections, processing procedures, and ancillary study protocols in compliance with regulatory requirements and institutional standards.
  • Participate in quality assurance and quality control activities, including instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures, including proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Continuously update knowledge and skills through participation in relevant continuing education opportunities.
  • Provide training and guidance to surgical pathology technicians, specimen processors, residents, and medical students on specimen processing techniques.
