About The Position

The Surgical Technician works in collaboration with the surgeon and RN to achieve optimal patient outcomes. This role involves assisting with the orientation of all surgical techs in the perioperative area and implementing OR policies and procedures. The Surgical Technician facilitates the safe and effective completion of surgical procedures, planning and implementing direct and indirect care to patients of all ages in the Operating Room. Responsibilities include preparing and maintaining an aseptic surgical field, assisting with procedures performed in surgery, functioning in a scrub role, and being part of the OR team. The technician handles instruments according to their instructions for use and follows infection prevention principles.

Requirements

• Technical School certificate course in Surgical Technology required.
• 15 continuing education hours related to the practice of surgical technology must be maintained annually to continue employment.
• 1-3 years of operating room surgical technician experience required.
• 1-2 years of lead surgical technician responsibilities preferred.

Responsibilities

• Prepares the operating room for surgical cases, ensuring all equipment, instruments, and supplies are properly organized and available.
• Maintains aseptic techniques and ensures sterile field integrity during surgical procedures.
• Anticipates the surgeon's needs during procedures, efficiently passing instruments and materials as required.
• Performs sponge, needle, and instrument counts with the circulating nurse to ensure patient safety.
• Retains, labels, and documents specimens for pathology accurately, ensuring proper handling and transfer.
• Assists with patient positioning, draping, and transfer methods to ensure safety and comfort.
• Cleans, reprocesses, and sterilizes surgical instruments and equipment following established protocols.
• Demonstrates knowledge of emergency protocols and takes appropriate action in emergency situations.
• Assists in maintaining and updating physician preference cards to reflect procedural requirements.
• Contributes to perioperative team efficiency by restocking supplies, returning equipment to storage, and ensuring operating rooms are ready for subsequent cases.
• Performs other duties as assigned and complies with all policies and standards.
