About The Position

The PRN Lactation Specialist at St. Marys Regional Hospital is responsible for providing breastfeeding education, consultation, and counseling to patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. This role involves assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating breastfeeding management, offering holistic, evidence-based support from preconception to weaning. The specialist acts as an advocate for breastfeeding, provides support and strategies for patients, conducts prenatal classes, and delivers outpatient care, including home visits for families facing breastfeeding challenges. Additionally, the specialist serves as a clinical expert for staff, develops educational programs, and promotes the mission and values of SCL Health.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Current license as a Registered Nurse in the state of practice.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS-HCP) certification upon hire or obtained within 60 days.
  • Certification by the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC) within 2 years of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree of Nursing.
  • IBCLC certification.
  • Two years of recent maternal/child nursing experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate breastfeeding management for patients.
  • Provide holistic, evidence-based breastfeeding support from preconception to weaning.
  • Act as an advocate for breastfeeding as the child-feeding norm.
  • Support patients by suggesting strategies for breastfeeding and addressing concerns.
  • Conduct prenatal breastfeeding classes and evaluate educational outcomes.
  • Deliver appropriate education for patients and their families.
  • Provide outpatient care, consultation, and home visits for breastfeeding difficulties.
  • Act as a clinical expert/resource for staff on lactation subjects.
  • Facilitate the development of policies that support breastfeeding.
  • Participate in the development of educational programs for healthcare providers.
  • Promote the mission, vision, and values of SCL Health.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Float to other departments based on business needs.
  • Be available for on-call duties during scheduled shifts.
