To learn more about CIBC, please visit CIBC.com What You’ll Be Doing As a Private Banking Underwriter, you will be responsible for evaluating and structuring complex credit requests for high-net-worth clients, including investment-backed lending, program lending, real estate-secured facilities, and bespoke unsecured lending solutions. You will use your advanced financial analysis, risk management, and client service skills to deliver customized credit solutions that support CIBC’s business objectives while maintaining strong risk controls. Your responsibilities include conducting thorough due diligence, financial analysis, and credit assessments to ensure sound risk management and the delivery of tailored financial solutions. You will work closely with relationship managers, credit officers, and other stakeholders to facilitate the approval of credit facilities, ensuring compliance with internal policies and regulatory standards. As a senior underwriter, you will also provide guidance to junior underwriters and act as a subject matter expert on credit structuring. Requirements

  • Experienced in Underwriting: You bring 3 to 5 years of underwriting experience, specializing in complex lending solutions for high-net-worth clients, with proven expertise in risk assessment across diverse private banking products and structures.
  • Skilled in Financial Analysis: You can analyze financial statements, credit reports, assets, and liabilities with expertise in cash flow modeling and self-employed borrower assessments.
  • Detail-Oriented & Organized: You thrive in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments, effectively managing multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy.
  • Effective Communicator: You excel at verbal and written communication, clearly presenting complex financial and credit information to stakeholders, including assisting with procedural updates, and presentation materials for training.
  • Technology-Proficient: You have working knowledge of industry tools and systems like MS Suite (excel, word, teams) products, and Outlook.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: You have a strong understanding of federal and state lending regulations, ensuring compliance with consumer protection laws.
  • Customer-Focused & Collaborative: You build strong relationships with internal partners, providing exceptional service while ensuring sound underwriting decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Comprehensive Credit Analysis: Evaluate portfolio real estate and non-real estate transactions by assessing financial documentation, cash flow modeling, assets, liquidity strength, collateral, and potential total exposure risks. This includes reviewing personal tax returns, business tax returns, K-1 statements, global cash flow schedules, personal balance sheets, and other supporting documents.
  • High-Quality Decision-Making: Prepare portfolio credit summary packages, material amendments, renewals, annual reviews, and other credit requests promptly and accurately.
  • Effective Risk Assessment: Ensure underwriting decisions align with the bank’s guidelines, risk appetite, policies, and consumer laws and regulation requirements while providing sound judgment on credit approvals.
  • Strong Written Communication: Craft detailed underwriting narratives that clearly present credit rationale, risk assessment, and evaluation results.
  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement: Work closely with Private Bankers, Loan Processors & Closers, Group Portfolio Managers, and Senior Management to ensure seamless transactions.
  • Market Awareness & Compliance: Stay updated on market conditions, industry regulations, and consumer lending laws to maintain compliance and adapt to evolving guidelines.
  • Community Involvement: Complete at least five CRA volunteer hours annually, contributing to the bank’s commitment to community engagement.

  • This role has an expected salary range of $70,000 – 85,000 for the Chicago, IL market based on experience, qualifications, and location of the position.
  • The successful candidate may be eligible to participate in the relevant business unit’s incentive compensation plan, which also may include a discretionary bonus component.
