About The Position

The Core Privacy team ensures that products and services across Google's Core Product Area uphold the highest standards of privacy. We partner with engineering and product teams from the earliest stages of design through launch and beyond, embedding privacy principles into the foundational infrastructure and services that power Google. As a Privacy Engineer, you will play a crucial role in shaping and implementing privacy strategies within the Core Product Area. You will provide expert guidance, conduct in-depth privacy reviews, analyze systems, and collaborate extensively with development teams to ensure user data is handled responsibly and in line with Google's privacy commitments.The Core team builds the technical foundation behind Google’s flagship products. We are owners and advocates for the underlying design elements, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure at Google. These are the essential building blocks for excellent, safe, and coherent experiences for our users and drive the pace of innovation for every developer. We look across Google’s products to build central solutions, break down technical barriers and strengthen existing systems. As the Core team, we have a mandate and a unique opportunity to impact important technical decisions across the company.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience designing solutions that maintain or enhance the privacy posture of the organization by analyzing and assessing proposed engineering designs (e.g., product features, infrastructure systems) and influencing stakeholders.
  • 2 years of experience applying privacy technologies (e.g., differential privacy, automated access management solutions, etc.), and customizing existing solutions and frameworks to meet organizational needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing or implementing privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) such as differential privacy, homomorphic encryption, k-anonymity, etc.
  • Ability to articulate technical and privacy concepts to audiences.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive privacy reviews (Privacy Impact Assessments) for new and existing products, features, and infrastructure within the Core Product Area, identifying potential privacy risks and providing clear, actionable mitigation strategies.
  • Partner closely with engineering and product teams to integrate Privacy by Design principles throughout the development life-cycle, offering guidance on technical designs, data managing practices, and the application of privacy-enhancing technologies.
  • Translate Google's privacy policies, regulatory requirements (e.g., General Data Protection Regulation, California Consumer Privacy Act), and industry best practices into concrete technical requirements and practical guidance for development teams.
  • Contribute to the development and refinement of privacy guidelines, best practices, and training materials relevant to the Core Product Area.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including Legal, Security, and other Privacy teams, to address complex privacy issues, escalations, and incidents.
