About The Position

Our Human Resources Team at the Greenville County School District is dedicated to advancing student achievement by recruiting and employing the highest qualified staff for our schools and to serve those with whom we work. Position —Principal, Washington Center Location— Washington Center (Separate Special Education School) Length of Service—12 months Reports to: Assistant Superintendent Special Education Salary Range - Building Schedule - A7 Washington Center is a separate school facility for students with significant intellectual disabilities. Students are served on a specifically designed campus where there are 18 classrooms.The school's focus is to develop functional academic, self-help and leisure competencies needed for participation in family and community activities. Daily academic instruction with the Unique Learning System and Attainment Curriculum is aligned with SC standards, and students in designated grades take the state's alternate assessments. Programs such as: M.O.V.E (Mobility Opportunities via Education), adaptive environmental science, daily living, and community-based instruction (CBI) support the curriculum; and, augmentative communication and assistive technology are integrated daily into the school program.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in special education or related field
  • A valid South Carolina principal's certificate; secondary certification preferred
  • Three to five years of teaching and administrative experience
  • Working knowledge of state and federal special education laws and regulations
  • Outstanding progress-focused leadership skills committed to positive results
  • Extensive knowledge of innovative instructional methods and strategies
  • Advanced computer literacy skills including integration of teaching and learning technologies and assistive technology
  • Extensive knowledge of effective classroom management skills necessary for students with multiple complex disabilities and implementation of positive behavior supports
  • Commitment to recruiting, selecting, developing, managing, and retaining a skilled workforce that is dedicated to maintaining a positive school culture/climate
  • Commitment to developing and maintaining a school culture focused on students' best interest in academic performance as well as social and emotional development
  • Interpersonal skills that promote collaboration, professionalism, and relationship building
  • Understanding of diversity as an integral component of the school's organizational systems, processes and activities
  • Strong organizational, writing, and speaking skills

Nice To Haves

  • Individuals with significant experience in the administration of multi-age low incidence special education programs possessing certification in administration and/or supervision may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • To lead the school, its personnel, programs, and activities in a direction to yield the highest standards of achievement and instructional excellence for all students
  • To use the five goals of the Greenville County Schools' Education Plan as a framework for all decision-making relative to school growth and improvement: Goal 1:Student Learning and Achievement: Raise the academic challenge and performance of each student Goal 2:Quality Personnel: Ensure quality personnel in all positions. Goal 3:School Environment: Provide a school environment supportive of learning Goal 4:Financial Resources: Effectively manage and further develop necessary financial resources Goal 5:Communications and Community Engagement: Improve public understanding and support of public school
  • To manage, coordinate, and supervise services for children with intellectual disabilities and/or medical conditions
  • To supervise and ensure implementation of individual education programs
  • To develop partnerships and close working relationships with public and private agencies in advocating for appropriate services for students with severe disabilities
  • All other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
