About The Position

Principal UX Designer — Global Design About Walmart Design Walmart’s Global Design organization is responsible for shaping the experiences that connect customers, associates and partners to our mission: Save Money. Live Better. We are multidisciplinary team of product designers, design researchers, content designers, design technologists and operators, practicing across Walmart US, Sam’s Club, International, and the Enterprise. We are a craft-based, strategic design team delivering transformation of every touchpoint across all of Walmart. As part of Global Design, you’ll work in close partnership with product, engineering, content, research, business, and design system teams to shape experiences that balance user needs, business goals, and operational realities. We are building a design culture rooted in craft, clarity, inclusion, and impact. About the role As a Principal User Experience (UX) Designer, you will lead design direction for complex, high-impact product areas and programs. You’ll bring clarity to ambiguity, shape experience strategy, and guide teams toward solutions that are intuitive, scalable, and aligned to both user needs and business goals. This role is ideal for a designer with deep UX expertise, strong systems thinking, and the ability to influence across functions and levels. You’ll work across teams to connect near-term execution with longer-term vision, elevate design quality, and help drive consistency and coherence across experiences. You’ll also play a key role in strengthening design practice through leadership, mentorship, and collaboration.

Requirements

  • Significant experience designing digital products, platforms, or services with a record of driving impact in complex environments.
  • Deep strength in UX design, including interaction design, information architecture, systems thinking, prototyping, and visual communication.
  • Ability to define experience strategy and connect detailed design decisions to broader product and business goals.
  • Strong leadership presence and the ability to influence cross-functional teams and senior stakeholders without formal authority.
  • Experience leading large or ambiguous initiatives across multiple teams, products, stakeholders and/or touchpoints.
  • Strong storytelling and communication skills, with the ability to build alignment around a clear design vision.
  • High level of craft and a strong point of view on quality, usability, accessibility, and inclusive design.
  • Experience using and evolving design systems to support scalable, coherent experiences.
  • Ability to coach others, give actionable feedback, and elevate team quality through collaboration.
  • Comfort navigating fast-paced environments, shifting priorities, and organizational complexity.
  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree in UI/UX design, graphic design, visual communication, product design, computer science, information technology, or related area and 5 years’ experience in UI/UX, interactive and visual design, electronics art, multimedia design, or related area.
  • Option 2: 7 years’ experience in UI/UX, interactive and visual design, electronics art, multimedia design, or related area.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Interaction Design, Digital Design, Information Architecture, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in UX, product, or experience design.
  • Portfolio demonstrating strategic thinking, strong craft, and measurable impact across shipped work.
  • Experience designing for complex ecosystems, enterprise workflows, omni-channel journeys, or global products is a plus.
  • Experience influencing design direction across multiple teams or product areas is a plus.
  • Design certification (for example, IDEOU - Foundations in Design Thinking Certificate)
  • Driving product development in a user experience area
  • Master's degree in UI/UX Design, Interactive and Visual Design, Product Design, or related area
  • Related industry experience (for example, retail, supply chain, eCommerce, healthcare)
  • UI/UX, Interactive and Visual Design, Electronics Art, Multimedia Design, or related area

Responsibilities

  • Lead design direction for complex, high-impact product areas, platforms, or cross-functional programs.
  • Define and communicate experience strategy that connects user needs, business priorities, and technical realities.
  • Translate ambiguous or complex problem spaces into clear frameworks, opportunities, and end-to-end UX solutions.
  • Drive the design process from concept through delivery, ensuring a high bar for usability, accessibility, and craft.
  • Create and guide user flows, information architecture, interaction models, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs as needed.
  • Partner closely with product, engineering, content, research, business, and design system teams to align on priorities and move work forward.
  • Use research insights, AI, agentic design, analytics, market context, and feedback to shape decisions and refine design direction.
  • Influence cross-functional and leadership stakeholders through clear storytelling, strong rationale, and thoughtful tradeoff discussions.
  • Drive consistency and scalability across experiences by working within and extending design systems and shared patterns across a portfolio of products.
  • Raise the quality of design across teams by providing critique, mentorship, and guidance to other designers.
  • Help shape team practices, design culture, and ways of working that improve collaboration and outcomes.
  • Identify strategic opportunities across journeys, products, or platforms and help teams prioritize where design can have the greatest impact.
