About The Position

The Principal Technical Advisor – Radiochemist provides senior-level technical leadership and expert guidance on highly complex radiochemical and radiobioassay issues with site-wide and programmatic impact. This role supports advanced method development, strategic technical decision-making, and mentoring of scientific staff, while serving as a key technical interface with internal and external stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in physical science (chemistry, physics, biology) or engineering (chemical, nuclear, mechanical, electrical)
  • 15 to 20 years of progressive experience, preferably in nuclear-related environments
  • Advanced expertise in radiochemistry and radiobioassay laboratory operations
  • Demonstrated experience in: Radiochemical separation techniques, including ion separation column technologies
  • New method development and process improvement with documented quality outcomes
  • Radiological detection and measurement systems
  • Data review, validation, and quality control of radiological datasets
  • Strong leadership and mentoring experience supporting technical staff development
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) preferred and may reduce required years of experience
  • Active clearance not required at start; prior L or Q clearance within the past two years is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide expert leadership and oversight on complex technical, organizational, and strategic radiochemistry issues with division- or site-wide implications
  • Establish and support advanced technical programs to maintain state-of-the-art radiochemical and radiobioassay capabilities
  • Lead technical investigations and develop innovative, cost-effective solutions to evolving programmatic and operational challenges
  • Serve in a key role for high-level technical decision-making and long-range strategic planning
  • Provide expert guidance on atypical and complex radiochemical, radiobioassay, and environmental laboratory issues
  • Lead and mentor multidisciplinary technical teams working on high-visibility, regulatory-sensitive initiatives
  • Define scope and technical requirements for new project-type work and evolving program needs
  • Represent technical issues to internal leadership, DOE stakeholders, and external organizations
  • Develop and support strategic technical goals, milestones, and performance metrics
  • Remain current on emerging radiochemical technologies and serve as a technical thought leader
  • Develop, troubleshoot, and improve radiochemistry and radiobioassay methods, including fecal fusion techniques
  • Improve method turnaround times and quality for radiochemical analyses
  • Support development of radiochemistry-specific methods such as Ra-226/228 and I-129 for water samples
  • Provide mentoring and technical development for scientists in radiochemistry and radiobioassay disciplines
