Description Principal, Tax Planning This position is a key role in the tax planning department of Southern Company Corporate Tax. This position is onsite 4 days per week in Atlanta, GA. Job Responsibilities Research tax issues and properly document conclusions and risk Serve as project manager on federal tax planning initiatives (ie; PWA, domestic content, R&D, etc.) Assist with the management of the IRS CAP Exam Assist with tax planning for mergers and acquisitions, and asset purchases and sales Address federal tax questions from various business teams and subsidiaries as required Provide federal tax support for other functions inside the company, HR, Payroll, IT and corporate development Identify and implement tax savings strategies for current and new business activities Assistance with all federal tax-related matters encountered in the financial planning process Partner with corporate functions, business leaders, and external advisers on various business and federal tax planning matters Develop, mentor, coach and manage staff ensuring the development of employees through orientation, training, establishing objectives, communication of rules, and constructive discipline Manage Corporate Tax relationship with other operating companies of Southern Company Provide technical assistance to the federal tax compliance group in preparation of tax returns Consult with outside advisors as appropriate Assist with required tax disclosures for financial statement purposes Education and Experience Master’s degree in Tax or JD required. LLM degree preferred. Must have at least 10+ years of experience in corporate income tax. Utility industry experience preferred. Communication - strong tax research and writing skills; ability to communicate federal tax issues in a business-oriented language to peers, senior management and c-suite executives. Leadership – active, positive presence in the department Process-oriented - excellent project management skills; can prioritize effectively to meet deadlines and consistently deliver results Team-oriented – strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with a cross-functional team Skills and Abilities Communication - strong tax research and writing skills; ability to communicate federal tax issues in a business-oriented language to peers, senior management and c-suite executives.
