About The Position

National Instruments Corporation is seeking a Principal Systems Design Engineer for its offices in Novi, MI. The role involves accurately identifying customer needs and providing precise estimates for integrated system solutions. The engineer will interact with customers, NI staff, external partners, and suppliers to design, implement, and sustain custom test solutions. The position requires leading high-level collaborative design of integrated solutions, ensuring effective project alignment, and managing the development team to drive project success. The engineer will ensure adherence to established development processes and best practices, upholding high-quality standards. Responsibilities also include reviewing the quality of work and offering expert mentorship to enhance team performance, designing reusable hardware architectures, collaborating with Project Managers on technical solutions, overseeing technical deliverables, and leading customer technical onsite tasks. Telecommuting is limited to one day per work week; the engineer must work in the office the remaining four days.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree or the foreign equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Electromechanical Engineering.
  • 5 years of progressively responsible experience in an engineering services occupation.
  • 3 years of test and measurement industry experience or with automotive applications.
  • 3 years of experience leading high-level collaborative design of integrated solutions and ensuring effective project alignment.
  • 3 years of experience working with electrical and electronics engineering related to test engineering.
  • 1 year of programming experience using text-based languages or LabVIEW.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately identify customer needs and provide precise estimates for integrated system solutions.
  • Interact with customers, NI staff, external partners, and suppliers to design, implement, and sustain custom test solutions.
  • Lead high-level collaborative design of integrated solutions, ensuring effective project alignment.
  • Manage and provide strategic direction to the development team, driving project success.
  • Ensure adherence to established development processes and best practices, upholding high-quality standards.
  • Review the quality of work and offer expert mentorship to other engineers to enhance team performance.
  • Design and develop reusable hardware architectures that can be leveraged across multiple projects.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to devise optimal technical solutions for complex project challenges.
  • Oversee all technical deliverables for assigned projects, maintaining accountability for their quality and timeliness.
  • Work closely with customers and pre-sales teams during early engagements to advise and contribute to creating service proposals.
  • Lead the design of systems, workflows, and architectures to achieve desired future states using NI and NI ecosystem tools and offerings.
  • Drive program adoption by guiding the introduction of new systems and workflows to realize customer business outcomes.
  • Provide training, mentorship, and support to develop new talent in EV Power Conversion, ADAS, VSE, and Electronics domains.
  • Lead customer technical onsite tasks, advancing opportunities and ensuring successful outcomes.
