About The Position

The Principal Substation Engineer will be a technical leader in the design and execution of QTS utility infrastructure. This role will establish and direct design philosophies that enable reliable power across the global portfolio. This role will interface and collaborate with many critical stakeholders, including but not limited to: energy leaders responsible for utility contracts and negotiations; utility engagement developing relationships with utilities; pre-development leads evaluating new properties; operations leaders managing load growth projections; and development team project leaders planning and building new data centers and substations.

Requirements

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • 7-12 or more years of experience in substation engineering or a related field.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • Expert level knowledge of substation equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, and protective relays. This should include 15kV through 500kV.
  • Knowledge of medium voltage distribution system and design.
  • Knowledge of Electric Utility practices and operations.
  • Deep technical knowledge of NERC regulatory requirements.
  • Deep working knowledge of industry standards and codes (e.g., IEEE, NESC, ANSI, NEC).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to relay technical topics and risk factors to leadership.
  • Ability to Travel up to 25% as needed to support projects.

Nice To Haves

  • 16 Years of experience in substation engineering or a related field.
  • Knowledge of electric transmission systems and design.
  • Active in industry technical committees.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design life cycle of high voltage substations performed under EPC contracts, including studies, procurements, and development of construction deliverables.
  • Lead technical directions and decisions to support development, design, and installation of high voltage substations.
  • Own substation standards, procedures, and specifications.
  • Identify portfolio level project execution risks and develop associated mitigation plans.
  • Lead operational initiatives to improve execution success at program level.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to substation operations.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and contractors to meet project timelines and budgets.
  • Stay current with industry trends, technologies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations.
  • Develop and present technical support and training to technical and non-technical contributors.
  • Direct design philosophies to meet regulatory and utility specific interconnection requirements.
  • Direct overall substation design philosophy for execution across the global power portfolio.
  • Direct research of technical topics.
  • Support regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert in multiple areas of substation design, installation, and/or equipment.
