About The Position

National Grid Ventures (NGV) is the competitive, non-regulated commercial arm of National Grid focused on accelerating the clean energy transition in the US and UK. NGV develops, operates, and invests in major utility infrastructure projects, and is looking to expand the substation team.  This engineer will help support successful and on-time delivery of substation projects including supporting the capital investment plan, transmission interconnection projects, and other emerging work or new technologies. Substation projects include equipment replacement, asset separation, rebuilds and greenfield (new) substations.   Please note this is a Hybrid position requiring occasional travel to company offices.  Candidates must live within 50 miles of Brooklyn, NY or Waltham, MA.Job PurposeTo support successful and on-time delivery of substation projects including supporting the capital investment plan, distribution and transmission interconnection projects, and other emerging work or new technologies. Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams and interact effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective time management, task prioritization and the ability to apply technical skills with minimal oversight.
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program with emphasis on Power Systems.
  • 10+ years of related work experience in substation design and engineering.
  • High level knowledge of substation equipment (transformers, breakers, switches, reclosers, metal-clad switchgear), protection relays, control systems and SCADA interfaces.
  • Experience performing relevant system studies and producing technical specifications.
  • Proficient with Office 365 (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint) and familiarity with project and analysis tools (Primavera, CDEGS or similar).
  • Knowledge of industry standards and codes: IEEE, ANSI, NFPA 70, ASTM, NESC and applicable building codes.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record; ability to physically navigate in and around substations.
  • Ability to articulate consequences of supplier or National Grid non-performance and the bottom-line impact to projects.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing, developing, or implementing high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems (VSC/LCC), ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations while optimizing performance and reliability for transmission applications.
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as technical lead for substation projects, providing engineering direction, resolving technical issues, approving designs, and mentoring project team members across disciplines (civil/structural, protection & control, telecom, procurement, construction, operations, safety, and third-party contractors).
  • Perform preliminary and detailed design and engineering for transmission and distribution class substations up to and including 765 kV AIS and GIS, including single-line diagrams, layouts and earthing arrangements.
  • Prepare detailed technical scope documentation for use by internal and external design resources, support project cost estimates, schedules, and change control.
  • Design modifications and additions at existing sites and lead design for greenfield/brownfield projects.
  • Conduct and coordinate site visits, site investigations, team meetings, and drawing reviews to deliver a complete scope and design package.
  • Perform engineering calculations and studies as required (short-circuit, grounding/lightning and sound studies, AC/DC sizing).
  • Prepare and review technical specifications, bid evaluations, vendor technical queries, equipment ordering packages and witness factory tests; work with Procurement to source equipment.
  • Perform quality assurance reviews to ensure compliance with National Grid standards, specifications and applicable codes.
  • Oversee commissioning, energization and acceptance testing; support troubleshooting and resolution during start-up.
  • Coordinate and manage consultant work, ensuring technical adequacy and compliance with approved standards and deliverables.
  • Prepare clear technical reports documenting issues, investigative findings and engineering recommendations.
  • Support Project Management, Estimating and Construction Management processes, and participate in risk assessments, and outage planning.
