Our mission is to build the data platform for the age of AI, powering a new class of data-first applications and driving a data culture. ​​Within Azure Data, the messaging and real-time analytics team provides comprehensive solutions and a robust platform that enables users to ingest high granularity signals (real-time & observability) and complex data, converting those into a competitive advantage in real-time for both end users and modern applications. ​ ​​The Fabric IQ team is hiring a Principal Software Engineer to lead the design and implementation of the backend data services. Microsoft Fabric IQ is the new semantic intelligence layer that elevates Fabric from a unified data platform to a unified intelligence platform. It turns your unified data estate, already consolidated in OneLake, into a live, structured, connected model of how your business operates. Requirements

• ​​Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.​
• Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Nice To Haves

• ​​Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.​

Responsibilities

• ​Architect and build large-scale, multi-tenant data services that handle high throughput and reliability across global regions.
• Lead technical design reviews and define best practices for scalability, resiliency, cost efficiency, and security.
• Design core platform components such as metadata management, integration with other Fabric workloads, and data access APIs.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, data engineers, and applied ML teams to align platform capabilities with customer needs.
• Mentor and guide senior engineers on system design, performance optimization, and software craftsmanship.
• Define patterns for observability, reliability, and automation across the platform stack.
• Represent engineering in strategic planning, contributing to long-term technical roadmaps and investment areas.
