The Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) team builds and operates massive-scale, integrated cloud services in a broadly distributed, multi-tenant environment. OCI is committed to delivering best-in-class cloud products for customers solving some of the world's most demanding challenges. As a Principal Software Developer (IC4), you will design, develop, and deliver OpenBMC-based embedded Linux software for next-generation server platforms. This is a highly technical, hands-on role with influence over architecture and implementation. You will work closely with hardware engineering on BMC bring-up, contribute across the product lifecycle (from concept to sustaining), and help advance Oracle's transition to an OpenBMC-centric ILOM stack. Join Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Hardware Development (OCIHD) and help shape the next generation of Oracle server management. Our Platform ILOM (Integrated Lights Out Manager) team is modernizing Oracle's BMC firmware by adopting and extending OpenBMC for enterprise-scale deployments. We develop foundational firmware and embedded software for cutting-edge platforms across Intel, AMD, and ARM CPUs and NVIDIA/AMD GPUs. If you're passionate about OpenBMC, embedded Linux, and bringing advanced hardware and system software to market in a high-impact environment, this is the team for you. We collaborate across hardware, firmware, security, and cloud service teams to deliver robust system configuration, telemetry, and lifecycle management that power Oracle Cloud at scale.

  • Lead end-to-end development of OpenBMC features and subsystems within ILOM, including architecture, implementation, code reviews, unit/integration tests, and documentation.
  • Own key OpenBMC components: Redfish services, PLDM/MCTP stacks, sensor/telemetry frameworks, power/thermal/fan control, FRU/EEPROM, device management, logging, and eventing.
  • Drive BMC bring-up on prototype platforms; develop and debug kernel, device tree/overlays, bootloader (U-Boot), drivers (I2C/I3C, SPI, GPIO, UART, PECI, SMBus/PMBus), and services (systemd, D-Bus).
  • Implement secure firmware features: secure boot/verified boot, image signing and secure update/rollback, TPM/ROT integration, SPDM attestation, vulnerability remediation (CVE), and hardening.
  • Collaborate with platform, BIOS/EDKII, and GPU teams to deliver cohesive platform management; provide rapid triage for lab issues and qualification.
  • Improve developer productivity via CI/CD (e.g., Yocto builds, test automation, static/dynamic analysis, artifact signing/SBOMs); engage in upstream contributions where appropriate.
  • Support sustaining activities: defect resolution, performance/footprint optimizations, diagnostics, telemetry, and field reliability improvements.
  • 5-12+ years of embedded Linux development with strong C programming; scripting in Bash/Python.
  • Deep, hands-on OpenBMC experience: Yocto/bitbake layers, systemd/D-Bus services, phosphor components, Redfish, PLDM, MCTP, sensors/telemetry, and update frameworks.
  • Proven success bringing up BMC software on new hardware: kernel, drivers, device trees, board support, and low-level debug (JTAG/serial/oscilloscope/logic analyzer).
  • Expertise with server platform interfaces: PCIe, I2C/I3C, SPI, PMBus, UART, GPIO, eMMC, PECI, Ethernet controllers.
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills across HW/FW/SW boundaries; effective collaboration with hardware teams.
  • Experience leading technical projects and mentoring engineers.
  • Security features in BMC environments: secure/verified boot, firmware signing, TPM/ROT, SPDM, vulnerability management, and hardening at scale.
  • EDKII/BIOS collaboration and platform enablement; familiarity with RAS concepts (fault management, telemetry, recovery).
  • Test automation for embedded systems: unit/integration frameworks, HIL, CI/CD (e.g., Jenkins/GitLab), static analysis, and reproducible builds.
  • Contribution to OpenBMC or related open-source projects; upstreaming experience.
  • Familiarity with cloud-scale operations and fleet management of BMC firmware.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance, including expert medical opinion.
  • Short term disability and long term disability.
  • Life insurance and AD&D.
  • Supplemental life insurance (Employee/Spouse/Child).
  • Health care and dependent care Flexible Spending Accounts.
  • Pre-tax commuter and parking benefits.
  • 401(k) Savings and Investment Plan with company match.
  • Paid time off: Flexible Vacation is provided to all eligible employees assigned to a salaried (non-overtime eligible) position.
  • 11 paid holidays.
  • Paid sick leave: 72 hours of paid sick leave upon date of hire.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Adoption assistance.
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
  • Financial planning and group legal.
  • Voluntary benefits including auto, homeowner and pet insurance.
