We are looking for you to join our Emerging Capabilities Development (ECD) disciplined team as a Principal / Senior Principal Physicist, this position will be located at our Linthicum, MD or San Diego, CA location. As a Principal / Senior Principal Physicist you will perform research and development activities that seek to provide unprecedented capabilities by missionizing concepts at the frontier of physics. You will actively contribute to the following to include high-energy muon sources, charged particle beam dynamics, conventional RF particles accelerators, compact particle accelerator and detector technologies, integration and application of advanced laser technology, and other emerging mission applications of high-energy physics, plasma physics, and related disciplines. The Principal / Senior Principal Physicist will work across disparate scientific and engineering domains, working with subject matter experts from other fields, to yield mission relevant applications.

  • Designing and simulating particle accelerators and fixed target beamlines
  • Evaluating various particle accelerator and fixed target beamline architectures
  • Designing, operating, and commissioning novel ionizing radiation detectors
  • Developing ionizing radiation transport simulation software frameworks for evaluating and predicting performance of potential ionizing radiation detector designs
  • Developing automated data acquisition software for data readout of ionizing radiation detectors
  • Developing algorithms for triggering, reconstructing, and analyzing data from physical and simulated ionizing radiation detectors
  • Performing and analyzing simulations of ionizing radiation transport through radiation beamlines
  • Liaising with and maintaining a network of collaborators in academia, national laboratories, and other similar institutions
  • Ideating and proposing new concepts that apply physics to mission-relevant applications
  • Bachelor's degree with 5 years of experience, master's degree with 3 years of experience or a Ph.D. with 1 year of experience in Physics or related Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics technical fields; an additional 4 years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
  • U.S Citizenship required
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Top Secret clearance is required
  • Experience as a software developer using C/C++ and python
  • Experience with distributed version control systems such as git, svn, or cvs
  • Experience working in a Unix/Linux environment
  • Experience working on ionizing radiation detectors, particle accelerator/collider experiments, and/or experiments on fixed target beamlines
  • Experience working on large cross-disciplinary teams
  • Experience communicating complex technical details to a non-expert technical audience
  • Advanced degrees in accelerator physics, particle physics, high-energy physics, or nuclear physics or related Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics technical fields
  • Active DoD Secret Clearance or higher
  • Experience working in a laboratory environment working with oscilloscopes, photomultiplier readout systems, power supplies, etc.
  • Experience operating, designing, and commissioning ionizing radiation detectors (photomultiplier tubes), particle accelerators, or fixed-target beamlines
  • Experience in physics-based modeling and simulation, including particle-in-cell tools, GEANT4, or MCNP Monte Carlo radiation transport frameworks
  • Experience in digital twin design or model-based systems engineering
