About The Position

The primary responsibility of the Principal Safety Scientist is to conduct safety studies and evaluations that support internal and external process development and scale-up activities. The individual will collaborate with external testing laboratories and oversee the work conducted by vendor process safety testing groups.

Requirements

  • PhD in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering with 4+ of relevant industrial experience in process development or hazard evaluation
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities, verbal and written communication skills, and the capacity to manage multiple assignments effectively are essential.
  • The candidate must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the pharmaceutical industry is preferred.
  • Strong technical skills in chemistry, chemical processing equipment, and calorimeters are desired.
  • Prior experience in safety testing, hazard evaluation, plant operations, process development and scale-up, as well as clinical material manufacturing, is also preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting hazard evaluations of processes involved in the manufacture of strategic materials, chemical intermediates, active pharmaceutical ingredients, and addressing dust hazards associated with excipient blends and other BMS materials.
  • Experimentation, data collection, and interpretation.
  • Collaborating across teams to identify potential safety issues and guide process design toward intrinsic safety.
  • Organizing and communicating results from evaluations and studies both orally and in writing to various groups and management levels within BMS, as well as to external partners.
  • Utilizing a diverse range of instruments and techniques to support process research and development.
  • Conducting all safety evaluation tests following standardized procedures, with customization as necessary to achieve project objectives.
  • Taking initiative in problem solving, facilitating collaboration, and leading through generating ideas and evaluating potential outcomes of various project directions.
  • Employing solutions based on literature as appropriate.
  • Coordinating safety testing efforts among internal and external laboratories, including vendor safety testing labs, to support the introduction of processes into a global integrated development and manufacturing network.
  • Developing and implementing a testing strategy to support chemical registrations, such as REACH, across different regions worldwide.
  • Managing multiple projects and activities simultaneously, ensuring adherence to established priorities and effectively managing project prioritization as required.
