The Principal Scientist position will be part of the Scale-up Lab based in Devens, MA and reports to the Director of Pilot Plant Network and External Manufacturing (PPNE). The candidate will be responsible for scale-up and execution of upstream and downstream processes for all assets within the Biologics Development portfolio. The candidate will work closely with the process, analytical and manufacturing teams to improve internal process tech transfer procedures and collaborate on new technology initiatives. In addition, the individual will provide support (on as-needed basis) to external GMP-related activities (investigations, deviations, CAPA, change control) within BD’s external portfolio. Prior experience with Pilot, Manufacturing or Biologics Process development is a plus.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Biochemistry, or related field with 4-6 years of experience; or M.S. with 6-9 years of experience.
  • Strong knowledge of either Upstream Processing (Mammalian Cell Culture) or Downstream Processing (Harvest, Chromatography and Filtration
  • Working knowledge of cGMP
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Works well in a team and as an individual

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in single-use manufacturing and automation.
  • Working knowledge of cGMP is a plus
  • Knowledge of statistics, design of experiment, and data analysis is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Lead/support daily operations in the Scale-up Lab, including bioreactor fill/harvest, inoculation, sampling, feeding, operating chromatographic and filtration skids, buffer preparation, run monitoring/troubleshooting
  • Prepare/review technical documents including campaign summary reports and batch records
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to support process investigations, process development, scale-up, and tech transfer to clinical and commercial manufacturing
  • Introduce, evaluate, and implement innovative new process technologies and capabilities
  • Identify and implement process transfer improvement initiatives with internal stakeholders
  • Support GMP-related activities for BD External Manufacturing programs (as needed)
  • Maintain a safe work environment in the Scale-up lab
  • Works with an operational excellence mindset
