Microsoft's mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. At Microsoft Quantum, we aim to empower science and scientists to solve the world's biggest problems by realizing advanced computing platforms at the intersection of high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and quantum information technology. We are looking for a diverse set of talented and focused people to accelerate the delivery of useful quantum computers. Microsoft has an internal program pursuing topological qubits for large-scale quantum computing. We are also working closely with a growing list of companies to advance their qubit modalities and bring them to market on the Microsoft Quantum accelerator platform. The quantum product acceleration team is seeking a Principal Quantum Hardware Engineer to own key experimental milestone integration points on the path to a useful quantum computer. Your significant experience in quantum information technology from qubit design to fast qubit measurement to full-stack quantum computer experimental/theoretical demonstrations across different technologies will be required to execute technical development plans validating quantum plane technologies as they mature. You accelerate progress by owning key checkpoints that bridge the gap between the hardware engineers making qubits—such as topological, semiconductor, or superconducting qubits—with members of the architecture, software, and systems integration teams at Microsoft and with partner companies in the Microsoft Quantum accelerator platform. As a principal hardware engineer, you will be responsible for demonstrating dramatic improvements to future quantum computers in integrated systems. You will work alongside talented hardware and software engineers---both within Microsoft and with our partners---in a start-up like environment that values speed and people with broad skillsets.

  • Lead development and execution of milestone roadmaps toward key validation points.
  • Provide technical leadership on projects for device development and integrated system demonstrations, including planning, experimentation, data collection phases, and reporting of results.
  • Identify and engage partners to deliver key components and insights to advance technical program and meet product deliverable due dates.
  • Proactively guide cross-team collaboration and recruit experts to the team to fill skillset gaps in the program.
  • Partner closely with architecture, software, fabrication, control and readout, and systems teams within Microsoft and/or with partners bring working products to fruition.
  • Maintain expert knowledge to apply advanced concepts to influence product/business needs and drive action toward solutions, including engagement with external partners.
  • Produce consistent and accessible documentation of work and ensure such consistency in others.
  • Create and execute a realistic delivery schedule and commitments based upon strategy, available resources, and demonstrated capacity of the team as well as future resource planning.
  • Doctorate in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline AND 6+ years experience in industry OR Master's Degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline AND 10+ years experience in industry OR Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline AND 12+ years experience in industry OR equivalent experience.
  • Ability to foster and maintain depth and/or breadth of expertise needed for area of responsibility and drive cross-team collaboration across Microsoft and Quantum for efficient use of company expertise, including hardware, software, and algorithms.
  • Experience with design and fabrication of novel semiconductor structures and chips, knowledge of fabrication processes.
  • Significant lab experiences working on one or more qubit technologies, quantum systems, and cryogenic systems.
  • Proven history of managing successful technology development from R&D to production in cross-functional teams under significant time pressure.
  • Doctorate in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline AND 8+ years experience in industry OR Master's Degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline AND 12+ years experience in industry OR Bachelor's Degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline AND 15+ years experience in industry OR equivalent experience.
