Principal Platform Engineer
About The Position
This role provides senior technical leadership for a robotics and computer vision data platform, focusing on enabling machine learning engineers, data scientists, and robotics teams to work efficiently at scale. The Principal Platform Engineer will shape the platformâs architecture, build scalable APIs, pipelines, and developer tools, and provide hands-on guidance to senior engineers. You will lead complex initiatives across distributed systems, influence technical direction, and establish best practices for data enablement and observability. The position offers a collaborative, high-impact environment where technical innovation directly supports autonomous systems and advanced robotics development. The role is fully remote within the U.S., with opportunities to mentor engineers and solve high-priority technical challenges.
Requirements
- 12+ years of professional software engineering experience, with impact at the Staff or Principal Engineer level
- Proven experience leading technical teams on complex, distributed systems
- Strong expertise in building internal tooling, developer platforms, or data platforms
- Hands-on experience with Python, React, Databricks/Spark, Postgres/MongoDB, AWS, Airflow, Terraform/Terragrunt, Prometheus/Grafana
- Strong system design and architectural judgment for scalable distributed systems
- Excellent collaboration, communication, and mentorship skills
Nice To Haves
- experience supporting ML, computer vision, or robotics workflows
- C++ experience
- familiarity with ML lifecycle tooling

Responsibilities
- Define and drive the technical vision, architecture, and standards for data enablement within robotics and CVML platforms
- Lead major initiatives, providing guidance on design, implementation, and delivery across teams
- Mentor Senior and Staff Engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and architectural guidance
- Build and maintain scalable APIs, backend services, developer applications, and visualizations supporting ML and robotics workflows
- Architect, implement, and operate data pipelines and infrastructure-as-code solutions (Terraform/Terragrunt)
- Establish and maintain observability standards using tools such as Prometheus and Grafana
- Partner with engineers, data scientists, and product teams to translate workflows into robust platform capabilities
- Provide hands-on technical support to unblock teams and address high-priority issues while communicating tradeoffs and architectural rationale
