About The Position

Specialty Building Products is currently looking for a Principal Platform Architect to join our VALUES based organization. The ideal candidate will be responsible for defining scalable architecture patterns, ensuring modularity, security, and interoperability across SBP's enterprise platforms. This leader will align platform strategy with business outcomes, establish platform guardrails, and coordinate cross-functional delivery across engineering, product, data, and security teams.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in architecture and engineering, with at least 5+ years designing and governing large-scale systems on Azure.
  • Proven delivery of microservices on AKS/containers, API management, ingress, caching, and resilience patterns.
  • Hands-on experience with event streaming (Event Hubs/Kafka), schema management, and production streaming semantics.
  • Designed and shipped FastAPI-based services with telemetry (App Insights/Log Analytics) and zero-downtime deployment practices.

Nice To Haves

  • Certifications: AZ-305 (Architect Expert), AZ-400 (DevOps), DP-203/DP-700.
  • Professional accreditation (e.g., TOGAF, IEEE) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with .NET (C#) and React/TypeScript application stacks to ensure alignment between platform services and front-end/application engineering practices.
  • Knowledge of ADLS/Delta, Synapse/Databricks, Purview, and data quality/lineage concepts.
  • Experience with Generative AI-enabled approaches to software development (e.g., leveraging LLMs for code generation, automated testing, or developer productivity).

Responsibilities

  • Define and publish reference architectures, Architectural Decision Records (ADRs), and platform roadmaps across microservices, integration, and data domains.
  • Refine service patterns (FastAPI, Python) with API standards, authentication (Okta OAuth), versioning, and observability baked in.
  • Lead event-driven architecture adoption using Azure Event Hubs (or Kafka), including topic design, schemas, and ordering semantics.
  • Establish platform guardrails for security, reliability (SLOs), cost, and performance, enforced via CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/Bicep).
  • Incorporate distributed caching and global delivery patterns leveraging Azure Cache for Redis and Application Gateway to ensure scalability, performance, and resiliency.
  • Coordinate cross-team delivery (Product, Engineering, Data, Security) to de-risk dependencies and maximize use of contracts and services.
  • Define SLOs and error budgets, stand up incident management runbooks, implement automated tests, and enforce delivery via CI/CD pipelines and IaC templates.
  • Run design reviews and mentor engineers; guide modernization and migrations with zero-Sev1 expectations.
  • Define standards and review processes, maintain reference architectures and ADRs, and ensure end-to-end traceability from business outcomes to platform delivery.
  • Define and maintain golden paths such as starter repositories, CI/CD blueprints, shared SDKs, and versioned contracts to drive reuse and consistency.
  • Coach and mentor engineers, lead architecture forums, and remain engaged for critical incident escalations.
  • Drive platform capabilities that enable digital and AI initiatives, aligning platform architecture with SBP's strategic objectives.
