A Day in the Life In this role, you will lead and oversee the research, development, and design of packaging systems, materials, and packaging technology for new and existing medical devices. You will provide expertise and guidance in the various areas of packaging engineering to the department internal and external business partners. You will interact with multidisciplinary groups including R&D, Operations, Labeling, Tooling/Automation, Sourcing, and Marketing to provide unparalleled, leading edge packaging solutions in support of Operating Unit strategic goals and achieving desired results. You will drive new levels of packaging excellence across global locations to ensure long term manufacturing efficiency, quality, and regulatory compliance. This role will be primarily focused on Steam Sterilization Sets (ie. “Cases and Trays”). Note: May also include design and development of Sterile and Non-sterile Packaging.   • Design, develop, and test a wide variety of containers used for the protection, display, and handling of products
  • Determine packaging specifications according to the nature of the product, cost limitations, legal requirements, and the type of protection required, considering need for resistance to such external variables as moisture, corrosive chemicals, temperature variations, light, heat, rough handling, and tampering
  • Design package exteriors considering such factors as product identification, aesthetic quality, printing and production techniques
  • Clarify collaboration across R&D, Quality/Regulatory, Marketing, Manufacturing, Supply Chain and end-users (surgical staff) to capture functional requirements and user workflows
  • Require familiarity with relevant FDA and OUS regulations as well as ISO and ASTM standards for medical devices, packaging and labeling.
  • Documentation management and/or coordination of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Design History Files (DHFs), and change control
  • May support prototype line and production line development in manufacturing facilities/plants
  • Bachelor’s Degree and 7+ years of Packaging Engineering experience OR Master’s Degree and 5+ years of experience OR PhD and 3+ years of experience
  • Experience with and passion for Cases and Trays designed for Steam Sterilization
  • Degree in Packaging Science, Mechanical Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering
  • Experience working in medical device or pharmaceutical industry
