Principal Model Researcher

EricssonAustin, TX

About The Position

The Principal AI Model Architect is a strategically critical role in the silicon program, acting as the bridge between AI research and silicon development. This position involves deep, architecture-level work to partition massive parameter models, define tiling strategies, project performance on future silicon, and ensure a mathematically sound path for implementation. The decisions made in this role directly influence hardware design.

Requirements

  • Deep, battle-tested knowledge of Transformer architectures, including the hardware implications of design choices.
  • Experience in 'Hardware-in-the-Loop' environments, considering cache behavior, memory bottlenecks, and execution unit performance.
  • Advanced proficiency in JAX (strongly preferred), PyTorch, or TensorFlow, particularly at the export and compilation layer (graph capture, XLA compilation, StableHLO).
  • Experience with SystemC, Transaction-Level Modeling, or custom cycle-accurate simulation frameworks for validating architectural decisions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience applying AI to real RAN workloads (channel estimation, beamforming, interference management at L1/L2/L3).
  • Understanding of the journey from a high-level compute graph to a hardware-bound execution sequence.
  • Hands-on experience with complex-valued AI models and their mapping to DSP and matrix accelerator hardware, including fixed-point quantization, dynamic range, and numerical stability.

Responsibilities

  • Convert bleeding-edge AI and RAN algorithms (Transformers, Grouped Query Attention, Rotary Positional Embeddings) into precise hardware specifications for the ASIC team and concrete lowering requirements for the SDK team.
  • Define strategies for decomposing and mapping massive models across heterogeneous compute fabrics, including tensor parallelism, pipeline stages, and tiling across HBM and on-chip SRAM.
  • Own and maintain canonical reference implementations in JAX and PyTorch, serving as the 'Source of Truth' for the program.
  • Work with the SDK team to ensure alignment between researcher intent and hardware execution.
  • Project performance using cycle-accurate simulators, SystemC models, and intuition to guide silicon tape-out decisions.
