PRINCIPAL METALLURGIST – TECHNOLOGY PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE PRINCIPAL METALLURGIST – TECHNOLOGY: Provides a diversified range of technical services to our internal and external customers supporting the attainment of Company and division goals. Responsible for making disposition of referred, non-conforming and off-standard material, including but not limited to RMRs and customer claims. Responsible for providing training and education to key customers. Provides leadership to less-experienced staff. Provides support, leadership and guidance to peers, customers and manager in key projects and opportunities. Leads others in the use of statistical methods and experimental design. Manages functional project teams to address and solve complex technical problems and recognize business trends for alloy and process development, including project planning and budget compliance. Recognizes and communicates technical risk to management. Applies SPC, six-sigma and/or BPI tools to detect project inefficiencies. Performs all other duties and special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering, Materials Science or related field required.
  • 8 or more years relevant experience required.
  • Interprets internal/external business issues and recommends best practices in own function.
  • Has developed depth and breadth of expertise in own function.
  • Effectively manages projects or teams, including coordination of resources outside of own area.
  • Forecasts and plans resource requirements for projects or teams.
  • Monitors and controls costs for own work and may manage costs/budgets for large projects or areas.
  • Advanced knowledge of metallurgical principles, standards, methods and practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of metallurgical and production equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the newest and latest technologies available.
  • Functional knowledge of statistics, six sigma and/or BPI practices.
  • Solves complex problems; takes a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions.
  • Anticipates customer needs; assesses requirements and identifies new solutions.
  • Leads others to resolve complex problems in non-standard situations and develop creative solutions.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks and make appropriate decisions.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Ability to access mill and manufacturing areas.
  • Demonstrates ability to assist others in the use of statistical methods and provide support to others for experimental design.
  • Ability to provide training and education to key customers.
