About The Position

Collins Aerospace is seeking to fill a Mechanical Systems Engineering position within the Pneumatic Controls, Hydro-Mechanical, and Actuation Design group. In this role, you will design innovative pneumatic control systems, define system components using physics-based models, and create detailed schematics and layouts. You will lead communication of requirements with the integrated product team, conduct design analyses and trade studies, and support testing to ensure systems meet or exceed specifications The Pneumatic, Hydro-Mechanical, and Actuation, Design group is responsible for a range of pneumatic and hydro-mechanical components, including pneumatic valves, such as butterfly, in-line, and check valves, actuators, and jet-fuel controls that support flow division, fuel metering, pressure regulation, and high-pressure relief. This position has a strong focus on physics-based modeling and analysis of pneumatic components and systems to support requirement decomposition from system level to component. You will also support testing and perform data analysis for development hardware and requirements verification. The group’s responsibilities span design and development, qualification, assembly and testing, aftermarket support, and field service.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.

Nice To Haves

  • 3–5+ years of experience in pneumatic valve systems or design.
  • Strong fundamentals in pneumatic controls and control system design, analysis, and testing.
  • Equation/Physics based modeling experience in any coding language.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB, Simscape or Dymola.
  • Hands-on experience performing engineering analyses such as thermal, fluid dynamics, or tolerance stack-up.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with component-level requirements development, management, validation, and verification activities.
  • Background in testing development hardware, test planning, instrumentation, and data analysis.
  • Ability to troubleshoot component or system-level issues
  • Familiarity with aerospace standards (e.g., DO-160, ARP4754A, ARP4761, AS9100) and qualification processes.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary engineering environments involving design, systems, and test teams.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to create clear documentation, reports, and presentations
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced engineering environment

Responsibilities

  • Research, plan, design, and develop mechanical products and systems in areas including, but not limited to, mechanical, pneumatic, thermal, and hydraulic disciplines.
  • Focus on critical military and commercial projects, system validation, operational functionality, design verification, and mission performance, with future work on advanced systems.
  • Follow all applicable design, safety, and qualification standards throughout development programs.
  • Perform detailed steady state system analysis using physics-based models
  • Collaborate in a team environment to design functional system architecture, defining major components and subsystems using physics-based models.
  • Develop detailed functional schematics, concept layouts, sketches, and preliminary component details.
  • Develop, manage, and communicate system requirements to the integrated product team to ensure alignment with project goals.
  • Investigate design factors and conduct trade studies to identify optimal solutions for both internal and external customer requirements.
  • Support testing for systems, subsystems, and components, post-process data and analyze test results in relation to design specifications, rated requirements, and test objectives.
