About The Position

Collins Aerospace, an RTX company, is a world leader in advanced communication systems and is responsible for providing systems to all branches of the US military. The Protected Communications Systems Hardware Department within the Collins Mission Systems organization has an exciting opportunity for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our team. The department is seeking motivated and driven mechanical engineers with technical expertise and experience in hardware design, analysis, integration and production support. As a Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will be a member of a multi-disciplinary Integrated Program Team (IPT) consisting of System, Hardware and Software Engineers. Your work can support development of next generation systems, design enhancements, upgrades for existing products, and transition to production efforts. Product areas can include circuit card assemblies, electronic packages, and reflector-type antennas for communications systems.

Requirements

  • Previous experience designing and developing hardware, ranging from concept definition through detailed design and transition to production or product support
  • Demonstrated background in mechanical design, product development, material selection, and manufacturing processes
  • Experience with CAD design tools and associated product data management tools
  • Experience leading and solving technically challenging problems within aggressive timelines
  • Technical leadership experience with some schedule and budget accountability
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with design, fabrication, and integration of electronic assemblies, circuit card assemblies, structural components, equipment packaging and layout, and reflector-type antenna systems
  • Previous experience with structural and/or thermal analysis using ANSYS, Flotherm and/or other analytical tools
  • Knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and ASME Y14.5
  • Demonstrated hands-on mechanical aptitude
  • Prior defense industry experience, designing and solving problems for high reliability systems operating within harsh military environments
  • Working knowledge of military and commercial design, materials, and process specifications
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving hardware issues during prototyping, production and test
  • Experience with EVMS or other professional exposure to similar budget tracking systems
  • Experience in supporting or leading proposals and project management

Responsibilities

  • Perform and lead mechanical design, development, analysis and documentation of components and assemblies in accordance with system requirements
  • Provide oversight to production and suppliers during product integration
  • Interface with the broader organization to develop design solutions and resolve technical challenge: include engineering managers, engineers, designers, and structural/thermal analysts, other disciplines, program management, suppliers, and external customers
  • Manage and meet commitments for assigned schedule, financial, and technical goals
  • Support and participate in reviews and conduct trade studies to make sound technical decisions
  • Apply knowledge and leadership in technical problem solving and hardware development in a fast paced, team environment
  • Mentor and guide less experienced engineers
