The Principal Mechanical Engineer at Western Digital is responsible for the design and analysis of high-performance storage systems and subsystems, focusing on product design and production engineering. This role involves developing robust products that can withstand various environmental challenges, utilizing expertise in mechanical engineering, and leading cross-functional teams in the mechanical development of data center storage systems.

  • Lead the mechanical development and production engineering of data center storage systems and subsystems.
  • Design and analyze mechanical systems to meet shock and vibration criteria.
  • Utilize Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and tolerance analysis methodologies in design processes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on mechanical design and analysis.
  • Mentor and build the skills of less experienced engineers.
  • Develop and execute test plans, culminating in test reports to demonstrate design integrity.
  • Track schedules, issues, and resolutions throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Work with domestic and international suppliers and manufacturing locations.
  • BSME or MSME degree with a minimum of 8+ years of product development experience in computing, storage, or related fields.
  • Expert working knowledge of CAD systems, preferably SolidWorks.
  • Working knowledge of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and/or finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Experience in structural, vibrational, thermal, and acoustic modeling and problem resolution.
  • Familiarity with test instrumentation such as accelerometers and thermal test equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability in creative problem solving and innovation.
  • Highly proficient in writing and executing part and assembly test plans.
  • Experience with multiple analysis programs for FEA and CFD.
  • Solid understanding of manufacturing technologies and methodologies.
