Learn more at tandemdiabetes.com A DAY IN THE LIFE: The Principal, Market Access Contracting is responsible for leading the negotiation, drafting, execution, and lifecycle management of complex commercial agreements with PBMs, health plans, and medical device distributors and wholesalers. This role serves as a highly experienced contracting professional and a key business partner to Legal, Finance, Market Access leadership, Payor Operations, and other internal stakeholders. The position requires expert-level contract negotiation skills, strong judgment, and the ability to structure agreements that balance business objectives with regulatory, financial, and compliance considerations. The Principal, Market Access Contracting also supports process improvement initiatives, template governance, and provides subject matter expertise to junior contracting staff. The Principal, Market Access Contracting role at Tandem also: Negotiates, drafts, and manages a broad range of complex commercial agreements, including PBM Rebate agreements, distribution and wholesale agreements, pricing schedules, MSAs, SOWs, and value-based or performance-based arrangements. Reviews complex contract templates and revisions; prepares redlines and recommended language in partnership with the Director, Legal, and key internal stakeholders. Serves as a strategic contracting partner by advising on contract structure, risk mitigation, alternative approaches, and negotiation strategies. Interprets contract language related to pricing, reimbursement, performance metrics and requirements, data exchange, termination provisions, and compliance requirements. Assesses commercial, financial, operational, and compliance risks associated with proposed agreements and provides practical, business-focused recommendations. Collaborates with Payor Operations, Finance, Market Access Account Team to ensure accurate translation of business requirements into contract terms and successful implementation of agreements. Develops, refines, and maintains negotiation playbooks, fallback positions, template language, clause libraries, and related contracting tools. Ensures adherence to internal approval processes, including obtaining necessary approvals through established governance bodies such as price councils or contract review committees. Maintains a collaborative, solution-oriented negotiation approach and acts as a high-judgment decision maker during complex negotiations. Ensures compliance with company policies, including Privacy/HIPAA, and other applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, legal studies, life sciences, healthcare administration, or related discipline; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Expert knowledge of commercial contract negotiation, drafting, redlining, and market access contracting principles.
  • Demonstrated success negotiating complex agreements with payors, PBMs, wholesale and distribution partners.
  • 12+ years of progressively responsible commercial, managed care, or healthcare-related contracting experience.
  • Experience partnering with Legal and Finance to address commercial contract risks and financial implications.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (JD or MBA) preferred but not required.
  • Strong negotiation experience within the medical device, pharmaceutical, biotech, or healthcare services industries preferred.
  • Experience supporting process improvement initiatives, template development, or contracting infrastructure enhancements preferred.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to balance strategic objectives with risk mitigation.
