About The Position

IPG Photonics is the world's leading producer of high-power fiber lasers and integrated laser systems. We are seeking a highly motivated and hands-on Laser System Engineer to join our growing Advanced Applications team. This role is focused on the assembly, integration, testing, and field deployment of complex, high-energy laser systems for cutting-edge applications, including defense and counter-UAS programs. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and is passionate about translating advanced photonics into reliable, real-world solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in a systems engineering role, preferably involving the design, assembly, or integration of complex hardware systems.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with the assembly, integration, and testing of electro-optical-mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics and mechanical drawings.
  • Experience with high-power electrical systems, fluid systems (cooling), and system interconnects is preferred.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills to resolve system-level issues.
  • Experience with laser safety procedures and protocols is a plus.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience with 3D manufacturing processes.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the architectural design and technical direction for complex, multi-disciplinary laser systems from concept through commercialization.
  • Define and manage system-level requirements by analyzing customer needs, market trends, and competitive technologies.
  • Collaborate with business development and sales teams to develop technical concepts for new programs and proposals.
  • Provide technical leadership for the assembly and integration of laser systems, ensuring seamless connectivity of electrical, mechanical, optical, and fluid components.
  • Support the deployment and operational use of high-energy laser systems in laboratory, test, and field environments, including government ranges.
  • Perform hands-on assembly, testing, and troubleshooting of system components, including high-power electrical wiring, optical interconnects, and fluid subsystems.
  • Capture, document, and manage system-level requirements, with a particular focus on performance, reliability, and safety.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including R&D, software, and field service, to diagnose issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Serve as a primary technical point of contact for end-users, representing IPG's products and providing expert technical support during and after field deployment.
  • Maintain thorough documentation, test procedures, and reports to support system validation and certification.
  • Continuously seek out process improvements to enhance efficiency and reliability in system manufacturing and deployment.
