(NYSE: APD), a Fortune 500 leader in industrial gases and chemicals, is seeking an expert Principal Instrument Technician to join our operations team at its corporate headquarters in Allentown, PA. The Instrumentation and Equipment Technology Group supports the development of new technologies through the design and fabrication of innovative process equipment and controls. The team integrates design, engineering, and fabrication capabilities to advance first‑of‑a‑kind process systems from concept to operation. The Principal Instrument Technician is responsible for customer support, calibration, rental, maintenance, and repair of a wide range of analytical equipment, including pressure, gas analysis, flow, temperature, moisture, and electrical instrumentation. This role involves daily collaboration with Technology R&D and broader Air Products teams and requires a highly motivated self‑starter with strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalency.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience working in a laboratory or equivalent environment is required.
  • The successful candidate must possess safe work habits that comply with all safety, health and environmental rules and regulations.
  • Hands-on experience working with gases, chemicals and analytical equipment is preferred.
  • Computer hardware and software applications including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Visio.
  • Experience in the following areas is preferred: Producing and interpreting drawings and equipment manuals.
  • Mechanical design including the ability to custom build and retrofit equipment.
  • Safe and proficient use of hand and power tools.
  • Applying electricity and electronics theory to repair and rebuild equipment.
  • Chemistry background specific to safe handling, mixing and storing chemicals including the ability to read and interpret Safety Data Sheets.
  • Design Hazard Review (DHR) process which requires analytical and technical writing skills with an emphasis on safety and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Providing technical support to customers in the field.
  • Servicing and repairing equipment requiring electrical and mechanical skills.
  • Calibrating and maintaining analytical equipment.
  • Working in a fast-paced environment to provide on-demand rental equipment to customers and plant sites.
  • Performing data entry and database maintenance required to track equipment rentals, calibrations, and inventory.
  • Handling the annual budget for the calibration laboratory.
  • Growing calibration capabilities and equipment inventory based on customer demand and organizational needs.
