About The Position

The Principal Gifts Officer (PGO) identifies, cultivates, solicits, closes, and stewards principal gifts ($1 million+).  This role will work closely with senior leadership, faculty, volunteers (e.g., board members), and staff to develop principal gifts opportunities for the Pediatrics and OBGYN areas in support of Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM). The PGO will manage the Children’s Health Council. Specific assignments will be made to develop good working relationships and valued institutional campaign players.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field
  • Six years progressive development experience with demonstrated success soliciting and closing gifts greater than $1 million.
  • Familiarity with all facets of development, including capital campaigns, and a demonstrable understanding of how to manage a portfolio of highly-rated prospects.

  • Demonstrated ability to work within an organization emphasizing teamwork, respect, and excellence.
  • Ability to build and nurture effective working relationships with physicians, colleagues and donors.
  • Demonstrated appreciation and understanding of Weill Cornell's mission and the ability to effectively communicate it.
  • Ability to succeed in a fast-paced and complex environment.
  • Strong strategic abilities, highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, donor database programs such as BENefactor, Raisers Edge, Blackbaud.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with board members and key leaders preferred.
  • Successful experience directly supporting capital campaign volunteers (or other organizational leadership, such as boards, management, or physicians).

Responsibilities

  • Manages a portfolio of up to 60 significant prospects, at the $5 million or above level, including strategy, cultivation, solicitation and the closing of key gifts.
  • Builds and nurtures effective working relationships with faculty, administration, volunteers (e.g., board members) and staff.
  • Manages various volunteer initiatives such as events or committees.
  • Serves as an effective spokesperson and representative for WCM and for the campaign. Stays abreast of clinical, research, education and administrative initiatives at the institutional level and in respective areas of responsibility.
  • Works with donor recognition staff to devise, coordinate, and obtain approval for recognition plans and designs
  • Collaborates with Corporations and Foundations staff to pursue institutional donors as well as Planned Giving staff to encourage planned gifts from current Principal Gift donors.
  • Hires, supervises, and appraises Development Officer, Major Gifts Officer, and/or Development Associate.
