About The Position

A day in the life: Hertz’s TNC team is leading the charge in integrating Hertz vehicles with the world’s largest ride-sharing platforms. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will drive the technical vision, architecture, and engineering standards for mission-critical systems impacting mobility at scale. What You’ll Do Technical Leadership: Define and evolve architecture for our backend and full stack TNC systems, ensuring scalability, security, and long-term maintainability. Strategic Influence: Partner with engineering leadership and cross-functional teams to set technical direction, roadmap, and priorities for major initiatives and platform investments. Complex Problem Solving: Lead development and delivery of the most complex and high-impact projects, often spanning multiple teams and systems. Mentorship & Culture: Mentor, inspire, and coach engineers at all levels; foster a culture of technical rigor, innovation, and inclusive collaboration. Standards & Excellence: Author and review key technical documents, drive adoption of best practices, and proactively identify opportunities to raise the engineering bar. Technical Advocate: Represent the TNC team in technical discussions with stakeholders, partners, and vendors, advocating for scalable and sustainable solutions. Reliability & Operations: Lead incident response for critical issues, conduct deep technical investigations, and drive initiatives to improve observability and reliability. Continuous Innovation: Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies; assess and introduce new tools, frameworks, or architectural patterns where appropriate.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in software engineering, with demonstrated experience at the principal/staff level shaping system architecture and technical direction.
  • Mastery in at least one modern backend language (Java, C++, Python, or Go); proven ability to architect and scale distributed systems and microservices.
  • Experience mentoring or leading teams building modern web applications (React, Vue, Angular, etc.).
  • Deep understanding of large-scale distributed systems, database design (SQL/NoSQL), data flows, and API performance/reliability.
  • Advanced experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, Azure), containerization, infrastructure-as-code, and robust DevOps practices.
  • Experience providing technical leadership to multiple teams; ability to influence without direct authority.
  • Exceptional communication, cross-functional partnership, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated history of technical innovation, driving adoption of new technologies, and mentoring engineers to achieve career growth.
