About The Position

The Principal Engineering Technician position within the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is a permanent, full-time role that plays a crucial part in the region's transportation management and engineering efforts. This position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS), which allows for non-competitive appointments for qualified candidates. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate self-motivation, effective communication skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks based on the needs of the department and the public. In this role, the Principal Engineering Technician will assist the region with Surface Transportation Control by conducting work zone quality assurance activities. This includes coordinating daily work zone activities and providing technical and field support during incidents and events. The technician will also conduct traffic engineering studies, which involve field investigations, crash analyses, and the creation of condition diagrams to make informed recommendations for solutions. Additionally, the technician will be responsible for producing transportation management plans that investigate priority detour and egress routes, organizing information, and creating visuals, presentations, and technical reports for both internal and external stakeholders. The role requires inventorying and compiling data related to roadways, traffic signals, and intelligent transportation systems, providing clear interpretations and analyses of this data. The technician will also produce systems engineering review forms for projects in preliminary design and provide technical support to various program areas, including Traffic. Moreover, the Principal Engineering Technician will assist in emergency management facets, which may include Traffic Incident Management training and coordination, regional responses to planned and unplanned events, and collaboration with the Region Emergency Manager to develop regional operational plans.
