Toyota's North America Quality (NAQ) Systems & Technology Platforms team is looking for a passionate and highly motivated Principal Engineer I. The primary responsibility of this role is to be the technology leader responsible for application development and support. Reporting to the Manager of Platform Services, the person in this role will support the North America Quality (NAQ) Systems & Technology Platforms department's objective to plan, advise, and provide internal consulting services to develop and apply technology solutions that align with business goals and objectives.

  • Work closely with Principal Engineer II to understand enterprise and portfolio standards applicable to solution design commencement.
  • Create proof of concept and prototype development to verify feasibility of design pattern(s).
  • Instruct the development teams on the best practices of implementing the proof of concept.
  • Lead multiple development teams in implementation based on business requirements.
  • Develop designs based on business requirements, collaborating closely with stakeholders to ensure their needs are accurately understood and fully met.
  • Create low-level designs using accepted design principles on approved platforms as reviewed by the Principal Engineer II in collaboration with the Enterprise Architecture team.
  • Maintain awareness of technical competencies of the development team members and work with members to improve and close gaps in knowledge and the way of thinking.
  • Set standards for code reviews and framework for solution technical oversight.
  • Perform technical oversight of the solutions vendor teams.
  • Ensure that the solution design and implementation comply with the latest security guidelines and work to resolve issues flagged in security scans.
  • Document and review system health with Principal Engineer II on a periodic basis.
  • Ensure compliance with enterprise architecture version standards.
  • Ensure compliance with cloud standards.
  • Proactively analyze cloud costs and ensure that cloud configuration is optimized for efficiency as well as costs.
  • Oversee system health and operational alerts. Ensure that the alerts are categorized, and relevant alerts/errors/warnings are resolved based on priority and severity.
  • Lead teams in resolution of highly critical (P1/P2) system outages for prompt service restoration. Lead problem investigations and implementation of recommendations/learnings that follow.
  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or equivalent professional work experience.
  • 7-10 years of progressive experience in Software Engineering and Solution Architecture.
  • Strong record of delivering enterprise-grade solutions across multi-year initiatives.
  • Demonstrated hands-on work experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS), including Serverless Architecture (AWS Lambda, AWS API Gateway), Managed Database Products (Amazon RDS [Aurora], DynamoDB), Containerization (Amazon ECS, Amazon EKS), and Search and Analytics (AWS OpenSearch, Amazon QuickSight).
  • Demonstrated hands-on work experience in full-stack development using Backend: Java, NodeJS, GraphQL; Frontend: Angular; APIs: REST and SOAP services; Application Servers: Jboss; Content Management and Integration products: Documentum, Informatica.
  • Experience implementing modern authentication and authorization mechanisms including oAuth2 and ForgeRock Identity Platform.
  • Experience with hybrid mobile frameworks and tools: Ionic, Flutter, Capacitor.
  • Strong familiarity with DevOps practices, including automated CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code.
  • Actively engaged in Agile/Scrum environments with emphasis on iterative delivery and continuous improvement.
  • Practical experience building dashboards and reports using tools like Microsoft Power BI and AWS QuickSight.
  • Proven ability to support mission-critical applications in production environments, ensuring service level objectives are met, system performance is maintained, and upgrade cycles are executed effectively.
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Professional), Certified Developer (Associate) and related AWS Professional level technical certifications.
  • Experience with Site Reliability Engineering practices and concepts in application support.
  • Experience working with legacy Java applications.
  • Familiarity with Informatica, Kafka, MQ.
