Principal Engineer Fire Protection Design Engineer - Alarm and Detection Systems Job Title: Principal Engineer Duties Define scope of technical programs and develop quality, cost-effective solutions to complex problems Apply deep technical knowledge to resolve problems using advanced practices and complex features Lead problem-solving across departments; recognized subject matter expert Evaluate program outcomes and deliver reports/recommendations Identify tech limitations and recommend improvements Stay current with advancing technologies Prepare and monitor plans, budgets, schedules, and work quality Communicate objectives/results verbally and in writing Occasionally author reports for external publication Demonstrate leadership through technical societies and publishing

  • Ph.D. in applicable science or engineering discipline and 5+ years of experience
  • OR Master's degree with 8+ years of experience
  • OR Bachelor's degree with 10+ years of experience or more
  • 10 years of recent design experience, including at least 4 years in Fire Alarm, Detection, and Signaling Design
  • General knowledge of:
  • Electrical/control systems
  • Connection diagrams
  • Layout plans
  • Logic diagrams
  • Panel layout details
  • P&IDs
  • Battery loading calculations
  • Working knowledge of NFPA Codes and Standards, including:
  • NFPA 13, 70, 72, 90A, 101
  • IBC
  • ISA and IEEE standards
  • Experience with 2D MicroStation CADD
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications
  • ABET-accredited Fire Protection Engineering degree
  • OR
  • BS in engineering with at least one of the following:
  • PE license in Fire Protection
  • NICET Level III/IV certification (SFPE)
  • Professional or Fellow SFPE member
  • Must meet minimum 10 years of design experience (4 in Fire Alarm/Detection)
  • Knowledge of electrical/control systems, drawings, diagrams, and calculations as noted above
  • Familiar with national codes and standards (NFPA, IBC, ISA, IEEE)
  • Experience with 2D MicroStation CADD and Microsoft Office
  • Security Access: Must be eligible for DOE "Q" clearance
  • Active clearance not required at start
  • Must perform weekly job site walk-downs:
  • May involve uneven surfaces, active work zones
  • May require ladder climbing, PPE, respirator use
  • Active DOE clearance (L or Q) within the past 2 years
  • Previous SRS Design Engineering or DOE facility experience
  • Proficiency in using MicroStation 2D CADD
  • Familiarity with SRS engineering support processes and procedures
  • Prior DOE L or Q clearance within 2 years
  • Prior SRS or DOE experience
  • MicroStation 2D CADD proficiency
  • Familiarity with SRS engineering procedures
