About The Position

Ongoing threats to national security require timely intelligence data, including signal intelligence obtained through electronic surveillance. Since the 1940s, SwRI has supported U.S. and friendly foreign governments, as well as commercial clients. While a non-profit research institution, SwRI develops state of the art solutions to real problems.

Requirements

  • Requires a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or Computer Engineering.
  • 12-24 years: Proficiency in performing radar signal processing and simulation required. Proficiency with HF propagation (ray homing) tools and interpretation of ionograms required as well.
  • 10+ years: Experience and in processing OTHR signals and proficiency with HF propagation tools (analytic or numeric ray tracing tools). Proficiency in ionogram interpretation, labeling, and/or scaling.
  • Experience developing algorithms for SIGINT systems (e.g., array processing, signal detection, signal characterization) required. Experience with application of AI/ML to signal processing applications preferred.
  • Proficiency with Linux and C/C++ required. Familiarity with Python preferred. Top Secret Clearance highly desired.
  • A valid/clear driver's license is required.

Responsibilities

  • Work with multidisciplinary team of engineers, software developers, and technicians in the execution of complex research and development, design and programs in support of national security.
  • Perform radar signal processing on HF over-the-horizon radar (OTHR) signals.
  • Develop detection and parameterization algorithm enhancements, including AI / ML techniques, to radar and radar-like signals to work in challenging HF signal environments.
  • Guide ionospheric science through focus on measurement of ionograms, applying signal processing to enhance the ionograms, and developing image processing and AI/ML techniques to interpret them.
  • Design ionosonde waveforms for near-vertical and oblique incidence paths to measure propagation.
  • Work with a combination of modeling and measured data to design, develop, integrate, test and deploy new signal processing capabilities in the areas of energy detection, channelization, signal recognition, RF geolocation and electronic warfare programs.
  • Work with a team of engineers, software development staff and technicians to create innovative solutions that include radar signal processing, array processing, and both training of and application of machine learning algorithms and techniques.
  • Develop creative solutions to difficult problems in areas from signal processing to data science and collaborate with client technical representatives and SwRI senior engineering and software staff.
  • Work at SwRI laboratories and support short-term travel to customer facilities and test sites for system installations and to provide technical support within and outside the United States.
  • Develop and lead new internally and externally funded research initiatives with support from coworkers and management in technical areas listed above.
