About The Position

The ADI Advanced Physical Technology Group (APTG) collaborates with ADI business units, universities, research organizations, and customers to advance next-generation photonics technologies. As a Principal Silicon Photonics IC Design Engineer, you will lead the design and development of high-performance photonic integrated circuits that enable ADI’s strategic technology roadmap. This role focuses on hands-on design execution, modeling, and validation of PICs for applications in datacenter interconnects, sensing, analog compute, and emerging photonics-enabled markets. You will be a technical authority in PIC design, driving innovation through rigorous design methodologies, simulation, and layout, while collaborating closely with packaging, device, and system teams to ensure manufacturability and performance.

Requirements

  • Education: Master’s degree and several years related experience required; Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field strongly preferred.
  • Expertise: Proven experience in silicon photonics IC design and layout for high-volume manufacturing. Deep knowledge of Si, Ge, and nonlinear material platforms for photonics applications. Familiarity with datacenter I/O, sensing, analog compute, healthcare, or life sciences applications.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in photonic circuit design tools (Lumerical, Synopsys, Cadence) and EDA workflows. Strong understanding of laser source integration (DFB, VCSEL), passive/active device design, and advanced packaging.
  • Soft Skills: Exceptional communication and organizational skills. Ability to manage complex design projects with minimal supervision and deliver on aggressive timelines.

Responsibilities

  • PIC Design Leadership: Own the design of complex silicon photonic ICs, including layout, simulation, and optimization for performance, yield, and reliability.
  • Circuit-Level Innovation: Develop advanced photonic building blocks (modulators, detectors, multiplexers, etc.) and integrate them into scalable PIC architectures.
  • Modeling & Simulation: Perform detailed multi-physics simulations and photonic circuit modeling using industry-standard tools (Lumerical, Synopsys, Cadence).
  • Design Verification: Define and execute design validation plans, including test chip development, characterization, and correlation to simulation.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with packaging, electronics, and process teams to ensure seamless integration of PICs into co-packaged optics and system-level solutions.
  • Process Interaction: Provide design input for fabrication processes and collaborate with foundries to optimize device performance.
  • Mentorship: Guide junior engineers in PIC design best practices and tool usage.
  • External Engagement: Contribute to technical publications, conferences, and partnerships with academia and industry consortia.

Benefits

  • medical, vision and dental coverage
  • 401k
  • paid vacation, holidays, and sick time
