Principal Engineer - Pricing Platform

RemitlySeattle, WA
$240,000 - $300,000Onsite

About The Position

Remitly is building a real-time pricing platform that sets optimal prices for our customers across 5,300+ corridors. As a Principal Engineer on the Pricing Platform team, you will design and build the foundational systems that power how Remitly prices its product globally, from data infrastructure and cost modeling to optimization engines and production serving. You will work on a small, senior team and have significant influence over architecture, technology choices, and delivery. You will report to the Head of Pricing Platform and work from our Seattle office.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 3+ years in a staff or principal-level role, including significant time building data-intensive production systems.
  • Strong Python fluency and experience building ML pipelines or optimization systems end-to-end, from data ingestion and model development through serving and monitoring.
  • Proven track record designing and operating distributed systems that make real-time or near-real-time decisions at scale, with strong fundamentals in system design, data modeling, and performance optimization.
  • Experience with cloud-native infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and a track record of building reliable, high-availability services in production environments.
  • Experience reviewing large-scale system designs, articulating security best practices, and driving consistency in how software is tested, logged, monitored, deployed, and maintained.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead large, cross-functional engineering initiatives, manage dependencies, and influence technical strategy with a high degree of autonomy.
  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Set architectural direction: Lead the design and evolution of the Pricing Platform — spanning data infrastructure, cost modeling, market data ingestion, optimization, and production serving — ensuring solutions are scalable, low-latency, and fault-tolerant.
  • Drive large-scale initiatives: Own the end-to-end build of critical platform components, including FX market feeds, per-transaction cost models, optimization engines, guardrail and fallback systems, and internal tooling. Plan and sequence delivery for speed and quality.
  • Advance engineering excellence: Define and uphold standards for observability, reliability, and operational excellence across the platform. Build anomaly detection, kill switches, and confidence-based fallback chains into production systems from day one.
  • Lead cross-functional collaboration: Partner with Finance, Treasury, Product, and Analytics to translate complex pricing requirements into technical solutions. Represent engineering in strategic discussions with senior leadership.
  • Mentor and grow the team: Elevate the engineering bar through rigorous design reviews, code reviews, and hands-on mentorship. Model technical depth and clear communication for peers across the organization.
  • Evaluate and evolve technology: Assess build-vs.-buy decisions for components across the stack — from ML pipeline frameworks to serving infrastructure — and guide the team toward the most effective long-term choices.
