About the position

As a Principal Engineer - Cloud Architect at O.C. Tanner, you will play a crucial role in developing cloud technology expertise and capacity within the organization. This position involves collaborating with internal partners and external customers on key engagements, delivering proof-of-concept projects, and leading implementation projects focused on various cloud technologies and solutions. You will work autonomously, advise architecture leadership, and guide engineering teams while maintaining a strategic vision for technology implementation at O.C. Tanner.

Responsibilities

  • Help internal partners develop cloud technology expertise and capacity.
  • Collaborate with customers and external partners on key engagements.
  • Deliver proof-of-concept projects and topical workshops.
  • Lead implementation projects focusing on key customer cloud technologies.
  • Establish relationships and build trust among principal engineers and engineering teams.
  • Work closely with the Cloud Ops team to assist in implementing cloud architect initiatives.
  • Participate in the Architecture Coalition process as a decision-maker.
  • Engage with the Enterprise Architect to set technology vision.
  • Maintain software system diagrams and keep them updated.
  • Present architecture designs and flow diagrams to tech leadership.
  • Create clear requirements for platform teams to support designs.
  • Guide and consult with engineering teams on design or performance issues.
  • Conduct code reviews and approve pull requests based on established standards.
  • Preserve and automate the deployment of developer source code assets.
  • Create, publish, and evangelize development standards and guides.
  • Contribute to cross-team libraries or services for consistency in developer experience.
  • Evaluate and recommend technology choices to meet business strategy.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree or 15+ years of professional or military experience.
  • 15+ years of IT Infrastructure experience.
  • Experience with installation, configuration, and troubleshooting Kafka.
  • Experience with installation, configuration, and troubleshooting Kubernetes.
  • Hands-on, in-depth knowledge of AWS services (EC2, ELB, RDS, Route53 & S3).
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  • Experience facilitating discussions with senior leadership regarding technical/architectural trade-offs, best practices, and risk mitigation.
  • Direct hands-on experience leading the design, development, and deployment of business software at scale.
  • Experience with software development life cycle (SDLC) and agile/iterative methodologies.
  • Experience with integration of AWS cloud services with on-premises technologies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Computer Science, Engineering or Math background preferred.
  • Strong track record of implementing AWS services in distributed computing environments.
  • Ability to think strategically about business, product, and technical challenges.
  • Leading highly available and fault-tolerant enterprise and web-scale software deployments.
  • Infrastructure automation through DevOps scripting (E.g. typescript, yml, shell).
  • Configuration management using CloudFormation, Chef & Puppet.
  • Strong practical Linux and Windows-based systems administration skills.
