Collins Aerospace is seeking a Principal Systems Engineer to play a critical technical role within our Engine Control Systems (ECS) Business Unit. This position supports a highly skilled embedded systems team and serves as a key integrator across disciplines to deliver safe, reliable, and certifiable aerospace engine control solutions. In this role, you will lead and influence software architecture and system-level design for complex embedded control systems used in both commercial and military aircraft applications. You will lead the development and strategic direction of diagnostic software to ensure high-quality solutions for diagnostic applications. You will be a trusted technical authority, guiding requirements decomposition, architectural trade studies, and design decisions while ensuring compliance with stringent aerospace standards.

  • Serve as a technical leader and systems authority for embedded engine control systems across multiple programs.
  • Lead system and software architecture development, including requirements allocation, interface definition, and design trade studies.
  • Collaborate closely with software, hardware, and verification teams to ensure integrated, certifiable system solutions.
  • Translate customer, regulatory, and program requirements into robust system and software architectures.
  • Support programs across the full lifecycle—from concept and development through certification, production, and sustainment.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable aerospace and safety standards, including software assurance objectives.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and design reviews to engineers across disciplines.
  • Partner with program leadership, customers, and certification authorities to support technical execution and issue resolution.
  • Drive continuous improvement in systems engineering processes, tools, and best practices.
  • Support legacy diagnostics applications
  • Troubleshoot production test software issues
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 8 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 5 years of experience
  • Experience in systems engineering for embedded or real-time control systems.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Systems, Software, Electrical, Computer Engineering, or related discipline).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead architecture and design efforts on complex technical programs
  • Experience with DO-178C software development and certification.
  • Proficiency in C++ for embedded or real-time applications.
  • Background in engine control systems, avionics, or flight-critical software.
  • Familiarity with model-based systems engineering (MBSE), requirements management tools, and configuration management.
