About The Position

Nova Biomedical is seeking a Principal Firmware Engineer to serve as a senior technical authority within our embedded systems Center of Excellence. This role is responsible for defining firmware architecture and technical direction across multiple products and platforms, ensuring scalability, reliability, security, and long-term maintainability. The Principal Firmware Engineer operates at an organization-wide scope, influencing firmware strategy, setting standards, and guiding complex, cross-functional initiatives from concept through production and lifecycle support. This role partners closely with R&D leadership, hardware, systems, quality, manufacturing, and external vendors to align firmware solutions with business and product strategy. Requirements

  • Experience : 12+ years of firmware development experience, with a strong track record in embedded systems.
  • Programming Languages : Proficiency in C/C++ and assembly language for embedded development.
  • Embedded Systems Knowledge : Experience with various operating systems, bare-metal programming, and real-time constraints.
  • Hardware Familiarity : Understanding of microcontrollers (ARM, PIC, Renesas, MSP430, etc.), peripheral interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART), ADCs, DACs, and debugging tools. Ability to read schematics and use an oscilloscope.
  • Software Development Tools : Proficiency in version control (Git), build systems, and scripting (Python, Bash).
  • Communication & Collaboration : Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work with multidisciplinary teams, and influence across teams.
  • Bachelor's or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Must be able to use basic office equipment: computer, printer, copier, telephone, etc.
  • Ability to function in a changing, high-impact position, with deadline and resource constraints
  • Ability to travel less than 10% of the time

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with interfacing with chemical sensors and/or floating sensors.

Responsibilities

  • Firmware Development & Architecture : Design, implement, optimize, and own embedded firmware for microcontrollers, processors, and SoCs across multiple products, platforms, and generations.
  • Technical Leadership : Guide a team of engineers, provide mentorship, and enforce best practices in firmware development. Establish long-term technical roadmaps for embedded firmware, balancing performance, cost, reliability, security, and regulatory needs. Influence technical direction across teams without direct authority through mentorship, design reviews, and technical leadership.
  • System Integration : Work closely with hardware, software, and product teams to ensure seamless integration of firmware with system components. Partner with quality, regulatory, and manufacturing teams to ensure production readiness and lifecycle robustness.
  • Performance Optimization : Analyze and improve firmware efficiency, reliability, and power consumption. Ensure firmware architectures meet applicable safety, security, and regulatory requirements.
  • Code Review & Documentation : Lead and participate in code reviews, enforce coding standards. Ensure high-quality technical documentation, including architecture specifications, interface definitions, and design rationales.
  • Troubleshooting & Debugging : Utilize tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and debuggers to diagnose and resolve firmware issues. Lead root-cause analysis for critical field or production issues and define systemic corrective actions.
  • Security & Compliance : Ensure firmware adheres to industry standards, security best practices, and regulatory requirements.
  • Research & Innovation : Stay updated with industry trends, emerging technologies, and contribute to firmware innovation initiatives.
  • Talent Development: Help define career development expectations and technical competency standards for embedded engineers, growing technical depth and leadership capability across the team. Provide technical leadership when working with external vendors and development partners.
