The Principal Design Engineer - Mechanical Systems & Externals at Pratt & Whitney is responsible for developing innovative design solutions for gas turbine engine externals, ensuring they meet cost, weight, and performance goals. This role involves collaboration with various engineering disciplines and requires expertise in mechanical design, particularly in engine hardware arrangement and packaging. The position is integral to supporting advanced military programs and involves using sophisticated modeling tools to create maintainable and efficient systems.

  • Develop technically sound design solutions within program schedule milestones that meet cost and weight goals.
  • Process technical and design requirements of gas turbine externals hardware including plumbing and ducting systems, component mounts, sheet metal brackets, and electrical harnesses.
  • Perform mechanical design of gas turbine engine fuel, hydraulic, lubrication, air management plumbing, and electrical and harness systems hardware.
  • Utilize standard work and CORE/ACE tools to improve the externals design process.
  • Collaborate with experienced design engineers on conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design activities related to engine architectures.
  • Interface with other disciplines including structures, project, and product definition.
  • Communicate with team leadership and management on status and risks to program schedule and metrics.
  • Negotiate design criteria/space with other groups including internal and external customers.
  • Complete complex tolerance stacks for fit/function.
  • Bachelor's degree in STEM and 8 years of engineering experience; OR an Advanced degree with 5 years of engineering experience.
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering degree.
  • Active and transferable U.S. government-issued security clearance.
  • Mechanical design experience within the aerospace or turbofan engine industry.
  • Experience with CAD (UG NX, Solidworks, or similar) solid modeling and finite element analysis tools (i.e., ANSYS or similar).
  • Program/project management experience (PMP certification).
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement principles and tools (i.e., LEAN, CORE, ACE, or Six Sigma).
