VEIR is enabling a new generation of compact, efficient, high-power, and long-distance power delivery solutions, solving bottlenecks that exist across the entire electricity value chain, from generation through to data center server racks. VEIR's low voltage superconducting solutions are enabling new power delivery architectures in the world’s largest data centers and our higher voltage solutions are poised to revolutionize the development of electricity transmission and distribution lines. VEIR is preparing for rapid growth as we seek to solve critical challenges facing data center developers, electricity generation developers, and utilities around the world. The Role VEIR is seeking a Principal Cryogenic Systems Engineer to serve as a deep technical expert responsible for the design, analysis, and performance of VEIR’s cryogenic cooling systems. This role is focused on hands-on engineering execution and technical problem-solving across development, testing, and early deployments of VEIR’s HTS cable systems. As a Principal Engineer, you will be the go-to expert for cryogenic system behavior and performance, owning complex technical problems from concept through validation. You will work closely with system integration, heat transfer, superconducting systems, electrical, and controls engineers to ensure cryogenic designs meet demanding thermal, reliability, and operational requirements in real-world environments. This role emphasizes technical depth, rigor, and execution rather than people or organizational leadership.

  • Design and analyze cryogenic cooling systems supporting VEIR’s HTS cable platforms
  • Perform detailed thermal, fluid, and system-level analyses to predict performance under normal and fault conditions
  • Develop and validate cryogenic system models, simulations, and calculations to inform design decisions
  • Specify and integrate cryogenic components including:
  • Cryocoolers and refrigeration systems
  • Liquid nitrogen distribution and piping
  • Vacuum-insulated and thermally insulated components
  • Sensors, instrumentation, and safety devices
  • Support hands-on build, test, commissioning, and troubleshooting of cryogenic systems in lab and pilot environments
  • Diagnose and resolve complex cryogenic performance issues, failures, and anomalies
  • Contribute to design reviews, technical documentation, risk assessments, and safety analyses
  • Work closely with cross-functional engineers to ensure cryogenic designs integrate cleanly with electrical, mechanical, and control systems
  • Support supplier technical evaluations and component qualification from an engineering perspective
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Cryogenic Engineering, Physics, or a related field (advanced degree preferred)
  • 12+ years of experience designing, analyzing, and testing cryogenic or low-temperature systems
  • Strong fundamentals in heat transfer, thermodynamics, and cryogenic fluid behavior (especially liquid nitrogen)
  • Hands-on experience with cryogenic refrigeration, vacuum systems, insulation strategies, and piping design
  • Proven ability to independently solve complex, ambiguous technical problems
  • Experience validating designs through testing and data-driven analysis
  • Familiarity with cryogenic safety practices, standards, and hazard analysis
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced, hardware-focused development environments
  • Experience supporting systems transitioning from prototype to early field deployment
  • Experience operating cryogenic systems outside controlled laboratory settings
  • Familiarity with industrial controls, instrumentation, or data acquisition systems
  • (Preferred) Experience with cryogenic systems supporting superconducting or high-power electrical applications
  • Healthcare coverage with 100% employer paid premiums for medical, dental, and vision
  • 401(k) Retirement Savings Program
  • 12 Company Holidays + unmetered PTO
  • 12 Weeks 100% Paid Parental Leave for all new parents
  • Stock Options
  • Employee Assistant Program (EAP)
  • Regular teambuilding, off-sites, and lunch & learns
